(AHN) - News of lay offs continued Wednesday and included Caterpillar Inc. (CAT), again, along with more tax-revenue short municipal governments, retailers and others, and the U.S. Congress continues to work on the economic stimulus package President Barack Obama wants on his desk by Monday. As Obama has said, behind every job loss is an American who has lost his or her pay check. And stress is high with at least 11 million Americans reportedly already jobless, and that number continues to rise. And with the massive number of layoffs affecting every sement of society, some of those Americans belong to churches that are struggling to help them. Pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are among those trying to help as they watch congregants around the country lose their jobs and many also lose their homes. "Everybody's dreams are dying and we don't have the resources to help them," said the Rev. Tom Hansen, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, North Branch, MN, according to ELCA.org.news. Hansen added that some laid-off members have used up the social service aid available to them. In the meantime, conditions worsened in California with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger warning Tuesday that he will have to lay off 20,000 state workers if a budget deal isn't reached by the end of the week. Schwarzenegger had declared a budget emergency in December over the state's $11.2 billion shortfall. Schwarzeneggar is also telling county governments that the state doesn't have enough money to provide funding for such things as aid to the working poor, foster care, adoption and other programs. That situation is unlikely to get better anytime soon because the rising unemployment rates means ever fewer Californians earning a pay check to pay state income taxes on or to use to buy the goods and services that feed tax dollars into municipal governments that are increasingly leaning on the state for help. But there was bright news from United Airlines. It announced it was bringing back to the United States 165 call center jobs it had outsourced to India because customers were upset over the call center's inability to resolve complaints or issues after travel. A United spokesperson told Bloomberg news that using American employees in Chicago and Honolulu would allow "more sophisticated conversations with our guests" in order to help customers. And in a memo, United said that returning those 165 positions to the United States was "an opportunity to preserve and create jobs for our employees while sharpening our focus on how we respond to our guests when they contact us." Here is a look at some of the latest job losses. Heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) announced Wednesday it was offering early retirement to 2,000 employees. This latest round of job cuts is in addition to the more than 22,100 employees it had earlier announced it was laying off. Upscale furniture retailer Ethan Allen Global, Inc., has made an undisclosed number of job cuts at various locations. A company employee reportedly told Connecticutt's NewsTimes that the company told some employees at its Danbury, CT, headquarters Tuesday that it was making select layoffs at numerous locations. The company reportedly laid off at least 60 employees at its headquarters that day and an undisclosed number at other locations. Discount retailing giant Wal-Mart announced it was cutting 700 to 800 jobs at its Bentonville, AR, corporate headquarters for Wal-Mart and Sam's Club in a restructuring move. Honda supplier Elwood Staffing announced it was cutting another 86 jobs Wednesday, these job cuts for the Taladega, AL-based company are on top of the job cuts of 706 temporary workers the company announced last week. San Diego County government officials announced they had laid off 27 workers on Tuesday and blamed state budget cuts for making the job cuts necessary.The county also sent letters to 35,000 social-service recipients advising them to write to the governor asking him not to cut off aid funds.
