Skype founders sue eBay, investors
SAN FRANCISCO - The founders of Skype have sued owner eBay Inc <EBAY.O> and an investor group that has agreed to buy the Webphone service, accusing them of copyright violation and potentially disrupting the $1.9 billion deal. The lawsuit brought by Joltid Ltd, a Swedish firm owned by Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, says Skype used its technology without authorization. It comes on the heels of a legal dispute between Joltid and Skype in Britain over software rights.
Phone exclusivity limits may make sense: Sprint CEO
NEW YORK - The head of No. 3 U.S. mobile service Sprint Nextel Corp <S.N> said on Thursday that it is fair for the U.S. government to ask whether handset exclusivity deals should have time limits. Sprint Chief Executive Dan Hesse said exclusive carrier deals with handset vendors are important for promoting innovation in the industry. He was responding to a question about a U.S. regulatory probe into such deals at a conference.
Scientists create digital models of World Heritage sites
NEW LANARK, Scotland - A team of British scientists is preparing to create a digital model of Mount Rushmore using laser scanning so that the iconic U.S. monument can be recreated were it to be damaged. The survey work is part of a project to accurately record the exact dimensions of 500 of the most famous World Heritage Sites, including the Acropolis in Athens and the Great Wall of China.
Twitter funding would value it at $1 billion: report
SAN FRANCISCO - Twitter is closing a round of funding that will value the company known for its 140-character, stream-of-consciousness blogs at $1 billion, technology news site TechCrunch reported on Wednesday. The company will raise around $50 million, and Chief Executive Evan Williams told employees about the funding round, TechCrunch said, citing multiple unnamed sources.
Virtual reality used for blind to map real world
RALEIGH, North Carolina - Virtual reality can let video game players escape from the real world but a group of researchers are using virtual reality to help the blind join the real world more, by navigating real places. Researchers at the University of Chile and Harvard Medical School are using three audio-based PC games that allow players to navigate a labyrinth, a subway system and real-world buildings based on audio cues. "Essentially the games work by interpreting information generated by spectral sounds like footsteps and door knocks," said Lotfi B. Merabet, PhD of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School and co-author of "AER Journal: Research and Practice in Visual Impairment and Blindness."
Italy antitrust chief warns Google of heavy fines
ROME - Italy's antitrust chief urged Google <GOOG.O> to begin talks with Italian publishers to resolve allegations that it coerced newspapers into posting stories on its news website, or risk heavy fines. Italy's competition regulator last month began a probe after the Italian Federation of Newspaper Editors alleged that any publication refusing to appear on the Google News Italia website was excluded from Google's search engine.
Ebay petitions EU to stop blocks on Internet trade
BRUSSELS - Three quarters of a million eBay Inc users have signed a petition urging European Union antitrust regulators to stop companies blocking online sales, the Internet auction house said on Thursday. The European Commission, the EU competition watchdog, is now fine-tuning rules on distribution deals between manufacturers and retailers that will replace guidelines due to expire in May 2010.
Behind the snags, drama, hype: Meet the Boeing 787
SEATTLE - Boeing Co's <BA.N> long-delayed and hotly anticipated 787 Dreamliner is a case study in the growing pains that can accompany engineering innovation. The revolutionary carbon-composite airplane is now two years overdue for its first test flight, which is set for the fourth quarter of 2009.
Canada says won't review Nortel-Ericsson deal
TORONTO - Canada has decided against launching a review of the $1.13 billion sale of the wireless assets of bankrupt Nortel Networks <NRTLQ.PK> to Sweden's Ericsson <ERICb.ST>, Industry Minister Tony Clement said on Wednesday. "I am satisfied that the assets sold fall well below the threshold required for a review under the Investment Canada Act," Clement said at a press conference in Toronto.
Facebook makes money, tops 300 million users
SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook is making enough money to cover its costs and now has 300 million users, the world's largest social networking site said on Tuesday, proving the Internet's newest star industry can be a viable business. Facebook is now generating enough cash to cover its operating expenses, as well as the capital spending needed to maintain its fast-growing service.
