Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - President Obama pledged a new round of sanctions Friday against Iran for what he says is its development of nuclear weapons.
He warned that the Iranian nuclear program could destabilize the Middle East and trigger an arms race.
He predicted the U.N. Security Council would reach a new agreement on sanctions against Iran within weeks.
Among the countries joining the call for sanctions is China.
Obama spoke with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the telephone late Thursday. They discussed the “importance of working together” on preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, a White House statement said.
The Chinese president plans to participate in a nuclear security summit April 12-13 in Washington, D.C.
However, Iran’s top nuclear diplomat said after a meeting Friday in Beijing that Chinese government officials agreed with him that more sanctions would fail to create a deterrent to a nuclear program.
Chinese officials did not directly respond to Saeed Jalili’s statement but said negotiation is the best way to resolve the dispute.
The Iranians admit they are developing nuclear energy but deny they are working on nuclear weapons. Obama said Friday that “all evidence indicates” the Iranians are developing the weapons.
Part of the evidence appears to be taken from the defection of an Iranian scientist.
Shahram Amiri was resettled in the United States by the CIA after he disappeared from a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, last summer, according to an ABC News report. Amiri is an expert on radioactive isotopes.
Earlier this week, the Group of Eight foreign ministers said in a statement that they have “serious doubts” about Iran’s peaceful motives for its nuclear program.
The G-8 foreign ministers said after a meeting in Gatineau, Canada, that they are prepared to take “strong steps” against Iran.
Obama said in an interview on CBS’s “Early Show” Friday, “I think the idea here is to keep on turning up the pressure. The regime has become more isolated since I came into office. We’re going to continue to ratchet up the pressure and examine how they respond. But we’re going to do so with a unified international community that puts us in a much stronger position.”
Not only is the United Nations threatening more sanctions against the Iranians but also offering economic incentives if they allow international oversight of their nuclear program.
The U.N. Security Council imposed three rounds of sanctions against the Iranians so far for failing to stop enriching uranium.
France, Germany and Great Britain also joined this week in supporting the sanctions.
At the same time, China and Russia are trying to convince the Iranians to accept enriched uranium for medical purposes from foreign suppliers but to drop their program that could use the radioactive material for weapons.
The Iranians have rejected the deal.
The International Atomic Energy Agency reported in February that Iran had “not provided the necessary cooperation” to verify its peaceful intentions for uranium enrichment.
Obama said about the Iranians, “Part of the reason that we reached out to them was to say, ‘You’ve got a path. You can take a path that allows you to rejoin the international community, or you can take a path of developing nuclear weapons capacity that further isolates you.’ And now we’re seeing them further isolated. Over time, that is going to have an effect on their economy.”
