ADVERTISEMENT No one was injured in the March 9 accident _ the second in as many months involving a Lion Air MD90. But it put the spotlight back on Indonesia's troubled aviation industry following a string of accidents in recent years that have left more than 120 people dead. The European Union has banned all local carriers from landing there since 2007 _ about the same time the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration downgraded the country's rating to its lowest category. Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Transportation Ministry, said while investigations were still ongoing, the pilot blamed strong cross winds for the latest Lion Air incident, which caused serious damage to the fuselage. "It's a total loss," he said of the plane, countering claims by Edward Sirait, a spokesman for the budget carrier, that there was absolutely "no damage to the body." Lion Air, which began its operations with a single plane in 2000, today has 37 planes flying between the country's major cities, but also to Singapore and Malaysia, according to its Web site. A 2004 crash in the Indonesian city of Solo killed at least 25 people, the carrier's worst accident. No one was injured in last month's crash landing in Batam on Sumatra island, which has been blamed on broken landing gear, according to a preliminary investigation.
