Lufthansa pilots on Sunday were gearing up for a four-day strike over pay and job security that could ground two thirds of the German flag carrier's flights this week. BERLIN (AFP) - – Lufthansa pilots on Sunday were gearing up for a four-day strike over pay and job security that could ground two thirds of the German flag carrier's flights this week. More than 4,000 pilots from the Cockpit union are planning to take part in the stoppage from Monday to Thursday, despite a last-minute call from the German government to restart talks with the management. Around 3,200 Lufthansa flights -- 800 a day -- will be cancelled if the walkout goes ahead, with the company's subsidiaries Germanwings and Lufthansa Cargo also affected. Cockpit has called the strike to press for a 6.4 percent pay rise, more say in company decisions and commitments that pilots would keep their jobs when Lufthansa shifts passengers to cheaper foreign affiliates. "The situation has not changed. We must prepare for the strike and we regret the inconvenience that will be caused to passengers," Lufthansa spokeswoman Stefanie Stoltz told AFP on Sunday evening. One of the union's demands is for all pilots in the Lufthansa group, including affiliated airlines overseas, to enjoy the same salary. On Sunday evening Cockpit suggested putting this issue to one side and restarting talks on other areas, but Lufthansa declined. Cockpit spokesman Joerg Handwerg told AFP the strike was likely to go ahead, and accused the company of "looking for a fight." "The Lufthansa management is not interested in dialogue but will not say so openly," he said. In a statement earlier on Sunday, Lufthansa reiterated its desire to resolve the dispute before the start of the strike, which is scheduled for midnight (2300 GMT on Sunday). "We are open to talks without preconditions," Lufthansa spokesman Klaus Walther said, adding that "if Cockpit withdrew its list of unworkable and illegal demands... an agreement could be found quickly." The pilots fear jobs will be lost as the company moves flights to foreign partner airlines which offer lower wages, but Walther said the idea that Lufthansa was moving jobs abroad was "pure invention". Speaking on the private n-tv television station, Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer called for the two sides to return to the negotiating table "tomorrow or the day after" despite the strike. The head of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), Hans-Peter Keitel, warned that German exporters would pay a heavy price if the strike went ahead. The stoppage could cost Lufthansa more than 65 million euros (88 million dollars), based on an estimate given Thursday which said the airline would lose around 100 million euros if all flights were grounded. Lufthansa's worst strike happened nine years ago, when planes were grounded for three days, causing travel misery for passengers and costing the firm millions of euros. A list of flights affected by the strike can be found on the Lufhansa website: www.lufthansa.com.
