Microsoft's Bing launches deals feature
- Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> Bing search engine said it launched 'Bing deals' for both the desktop and mobile, allowing consumers to find the best deals locally, a service that will pit it against daily deals website Groupon. The company has partnered with The Dealmap, a service provider that allows people to find and share the best local deals.
CBS acquires Web video guide, hires the top exec
NEW YORK - CBS Corp <CBS.N> has acquired Clicker Media Inc, a service that creates a guide for TV shows broadcast over the Web, and named the startup's top executive as the new head of CBS Interactive. Clicker's Jim Lanzone will succeed Neil Ashe in running CBS Interactive, the digital division that includes CNET.com, TV.com, CBS.com, CBSSports.com, CBSNews.com and Gamespot.com. CBS announced late last year that Ashe, who joined in 2008, would be leaving the company.
Iditarod Race goes high tech with GPS devices
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - When the 39th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race starts in Anchorage on Saturday, 62 mushers and their dogs will embark on an annual trek that has evolved far from its shoestring roots. The leading contenders are professionals, working year-round to prepare for the race and financed by corporate sponsors. There is a significant monetary reward at the end -- $50,400 and a new truck for the winner, and smaller cash prizes for all the finishers.
Nintendo has high hopes for 3DS
SAN FRANCISCO - Nintendo Co Ltd <7974.OS> said it has set ambitious goals for its newest handheld gaming system despite growing competition from smartphones like Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone. Nintendo, whose growth has been flagging, is making a big marketing push as it launches the Nintendo 3DS, the first device to offer 3D gaming without special glasses.
Nintendo's 3DS contains Toshiba, Fujitsu chips: iFixit
TOKYO - Nintendo's <7974.OS> 3D-capable handheld game player contains chips manufactured by Toshiba Corp <6502.T>, Fujitsu Ltd <6702.T> and Invensense Inc, technology firm iFixit said after dismantling the hot new gadget. The 3DS, the first handheld game player to provide glasses-free 3D, launched in Japan on February 26 and is set to hit stores in the United States on March 27.
Sony to appeal Netherlands PS3s seizure in LG dispute
AMSTERDAM/TOYKO - Sony Corp <6758.T> said it will appeal the seizure of Playstation 3 game consoles by customs officers in the Netherlands following a court injunction initiated by LG Electronics <066570.KS> over a patent dispute. The Dutch customs authorities notified Sony at the end of February that an inspection would be made into Sony products imported into the Netherlands, which has now resulted in Playstation 3 game consoles being temporarily withheld, Sony said late on Friday.
Facebook valued at $65 billion in new investment
SAN FRANCISCO - Investment firm General Atlantic is investing in Facebook, valuing the leading social network at $65 billion, representing a 30 percent boost from its last big investment in January, according to a report on CNBC. General Atlantic is purchasing a block of roughly 2.5 million Facebook shares from former Facebook employees, giving the firm a 0.1 percent stake in the company, CNBC said.
Twitter's Stone: no IPO or funding talks
SEOUL - Twitter has no plans to go public any time soon and does not need additional funds because it is making money, the co-founder of the popular microblogging site said. "We have so many other things before we even think about that," Biz Stone told Reuters at a business forum in Seoul on Thursday when asked about the prospects of an IPO.
DreamWorks options movie rights to WikiLeaks books
LOS ANGELES - The DreamWorks studio has optioned movie rights to a pair of books about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and his controversial Website that is bent on revealing government secrets, company officials said on Thursday. One of the books is "WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy" by journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding of The Guardian, the British newspaper said in an article.
Texas man charged with illegal sports event streaming
NEW YORK - A Texas man was charged on Thursday with illegally streaming live sporting events and other programs on one of the most popular websites for illegal television content, a federal prosecutor in New York said. Brian McCarthy, 32, has been accused of running live feeds of football, hockey, basketball and wrestling on his website www.channelsurfing.net, which he registered in 2005.
