American goes on trial in Cuba on spy charges
HAVANA (AFP) - – An American who worked as a State Department contractor in Cuba went on trial behind closed doors on espionage charges in a case that has drawn high-level US demands for his release.
Cuban prosecutors are seeking 20 years in prison for Allan Gross, 61, who was arrested in late 2009 for distributing cell phones and computers to members of the island's small Jewish community.
Shortly before the trial began in Havana, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington called on Cuba to release Gross "and unconditionally allow him to leave Cuba and return to his family to bring an end to their long ordeal."
Said Clinton: "It is a matter of great personal pain to his family and concern to the United States government."
Gross's relatives, including his wife Judy, and a family lawyer were seen arriving at the court in Havana, but made no comments to reporters.
Accompanying the group were three US consular officials and a few members of Cuba's Jewish community, while police rerouted traffic away from the building.
Gross is charged with "acts against the independence and territorial integrity of the state" and his trial is expected to last several days.
A panel of five Cuban judges will hear the case and issue a ruling.
A court official said Friday's session had finished after several hours and that the trial would resume Saturday.
Expectations for an outcome favorable to Gross are low.
A Cuban state security video posted on the Internet -- purported to be a leak -- features an "expert" saying that Gross's goal was to "create a technological platform outside of the control of Cuban authorities," part of Washington's strategy to form "a virtual network of mercenaries."
The trial is a chance for the Cuban government to showcase "the legitimate basis of national defense against the interventionist policies of the United States," said Arturo Lopez-Levy, a Cuba expert at the University of Denver in the US state of Colorado.
A spokesman for the US Interests Section in Havana told AFP earlier this week that the case would be heard in "complete privacy."
How long it would take the court to reach a verdict was unpredictable, Cuban legal experts said.
Gross was arrested December 3, 2009 and accused of distributing "sophisticated communication media" to opponents of the country's 52-year-old communist regime.
Gross was employed by a State Department contractor, Development Alternatives, that was providing computers and cell phones to Cuba's Jewish community to help it communicate with the outside world.
The arrest halted a brief rapprochement between Cuba and the United States following President Barack Obama's election.
Officially, the two countries have not had diplomatic relations since 1961, but they have maintained "interest sections" in their respective capitals to keep lines open for dialogue.
Since Obama took office his administration has lifted multiple restrictions imposed by his predecessor, George W. Bush, easing travel to Cuba by US citizens and transfers of money from US-based Cubans to their families on the island.
In 2009, Cuba and the United States also resumed immigration talks that had been suspended since 2003.
A fourth round of talks was held in January in Havana, but Washington has made clear there will be no improvement in relations until Gross is released.
Cuba in turn demands the release of five Cubans imprisoned in the United States since 1998. The five were sentenced to long prison terms for espionage.
Cuba admits the five are Havana's agents, but says they were spying on anti-Castro groups in Florida planning attacks on the island and considers them "anti-terrorist heroes."
US officials have rejected any deal to trade Gross for the five Cuban agents.
A senior State Department official said at the time that if Gross were convicted, Washington hoped that he would be allowed to serve his sentence in his own country.
Cuba allowed a State Department delegation to visit Gross on January 13. His wife also was allowed to visit him in July.
