"American Idol" loses viewers despite make-over
LOS ANGELES - A revamped "American Idol" dominated U.S. television on its first outing but lost millions of viewers despite the addition of celebrity judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. Some 26.1 million Americans tuned in for the 10th season premiere of the singing contest, down 13 percent on last year's opening show when nearly 30 million watched, according to Nielsen ratings data on Thursday.
Feted for drama, Natalie Portman now goes for laughs
LOS ANGELES - Hot off a Golden Globe win for her performance as an unhinged ballerina in the psychological thriller "Black Swan," Natalie Portman is making a sharp about face by taking on her first romantic comedy. Portman, also seen as an Oscar front-runner for "Black Swan," stars opposite Ashton Kutcher in "No Strings Attached", which opens in U.S. theaters on Friday. The duo play friends who decide to have a strictly physical relationship but before long, their emotions creep in and mess up their groove.
Ricky Gervais says did nothing wrong at Globes gala
LOS ANGELES - Comedian Ricky Gervais said he did nothing wrong while hosting Hollywood's Golden Globes ceremony, and was merely "confronting the elephant in the room" with his controversial jokes about bad movies and stars in rehab. The British comic, best-known for creating the TV series "The Office", was widely criticized for having a "mean-spirited" attitude when he hosted the Golden Globe awards dinner on Sunday in a live telecast.
Sundance 2011 filmmakers face new reality
PARK CITY, Utah - When the 2011 Sundance film festival opens on Thursday, makers of independent movies, distributors and fans all face a new reality after recent years in which investors fled the industry and companies closed. While some players remain the same -- The Weinstein Co. is still around, so are Fox Searchlight and Focus Features -- there are several new companies playing the indie film game. And new technology is changing the way low-budget movies reach audiences in theaters and in homes.
Macy Gray asks fans if she should boycott Israel
JERUSALEM - Soul singer Macy Gray has asked her fans on Facebook whether she should cancel planned concerts in Tel Aviv because of the "disgusting" way the Israeli government treats Palestinians. International artists, entertainers and academics are under increasing pressure to boycott Israel because of Israeli actions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Sandra Bullock's ex-husband to wed tattoo artist
LOS ANGELES - Less than a year after his admitted infidelities caused the collapse of his five-year marriage to Oscar winner Sandra Bullock, Jesse James is ready to walk down the aisle again. The tattooed, motorcycle-riding James told People magazine on Thursday that he was engaged to tattoo artist and reality star Kat Von D. The duo have been dating since last summer.
"Glee" and "Project Runway" among GLAAD award nominees
LOS ANGELES - Golden Globe winning movie "The Kids are All Right" and TV shows "Glee," "Modern Family" and "Project Runway" were among nominees on Thursday for the annual GLAAD awards honoring the portrayal of gays and lesbians in the media. Singer Ricky Martin's coming-out TV interview with Oprah Winfrey, the movie musical "Burlesque," and Anderson Cooper's CNN reports on gay teen suicides were also among the nominees, which cover magazines and digital journalism along with film, television, music and theater.
Anne Hathaway cast as Catwoman in new "Batman" movie
LOS ANGELES - Anne Hathaway has nabbed the coveted female lead opposite Christian Bale in "The Dark Knight Rises." Warners made the announcement Wednesday morning.
A Minute With: Sundance festival director John Cooper
PARK CITY, Utah - The Sundance Film Festival kicks off on Thursday, starting 10 days of movie screenings at the largest gathering of the year for U.S. independent filmmakers. Movies screened here will become some of the hot titles of the year among low-budget and art house movies. Hollywood calls them "specialty" films. Last year's "The Kids Are All Right" screened here, as did "Blue Valentine" and "Winter's Bone."
Global 2010 recorded music sales fall about 9 percent
LONDON - Global recorded music sales fell around 9 percent last year as rampant piracy cut into major markets, threatening jobs, investment and the discovery of new artists, the industry's trade body said on Thursday. Some 19 out of 20 music tracks downloaded from the Internet were illegal, hitting demand for legitimate sales of physical and digital tracks and albums, according to the IFPI.
