No let-up by Charlie Sheen despite show shutdown
LOS ANGELES - Undeterred by the shutdown of his "Two and A Half Men" TV comedy, actor Charlie Sheen unleashed a new torrent of messages on Friday as Hollywood backed away from the increasingly erratic star. Sheen, on vacation in the Bahamas after a month of "rehab" at his Los Angeles home for alcohol and drug addiction, told TV show "Good Morning America" in a text message he would turn up for work next week despite the fact that on Thursday producers pulled the plug on his top-rated CBS comedy for the remainder of the season.
Dior suspends Galliano after booze-fuelled bar spat
PARIS - Christian Dior suspended its star fashion designer John Galliano on Friday pending an inquiry into accusations that he hurled racist remarks at a couple in a Paris bar. About a week before Galliano was due to present Dior's collection in Paris, police were called to a bar in the city's trendy Marais district on Thursday evening where they found the designer doling out a drunken torrent of abuse to a couple, a police source told Reuters.
Lines blur between animated, live action movies
LOS ANGELES - Only 10 years ago, Oscar organizers created a category for makers of animated films, but with live-action movies featuring more and more computer images, this year's nominees for best animated picture say it is getting harder to tell the two apart. "The walls between live-action and animation are becoming really porous, and it's interesting. I think in the decades ahead you're really going to see those walls coming down," Lee Unkrich, director of "Toy Story 3," said at a symposium of Oscar animation nominees on Thursday night.
UK royal couple visit university where love bloomed
ST ANDREWS, Scotland - Prince William and fiancee Kate Middleton returned to the university where they fell in love on Friday with an official visit to St Andrews on the east coast of Scotland. It was at the picturesque university that they got to know each other in 2001 as undergraduates studying art history. They went on to share a house on the outskirts of town and their romance blossomed.
"Hall Pass" on track to win weekend box office
LOS ANGELES - The Farrelly brothers' R-rated comedy "Hall Pass" is on track to win the weekend box office race, while Paramount's Insurge Pictures releases an updated version of "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" in a maverick move designed to encourage repeat viewing. "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never Director's Fan Cut," boasting 40 minutes of new footage, will only play in 3D theaters. Movie's gross ticket sales are a healthy $52.9 million as it heads into its third weekend in U.S. and Canadian theaters. The original version will continue to play in regular theaters.
Ricky Gervais offers Oscar hosts "a little opening"
LOS ANGELES - Controversial Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais has no plans to attend the Oscars, but he has written a snarky opening monologue for Anne Hathaway and James Franco. "Good luck to James Franco and Anne Hathaway at The Oscars on Sunday. I know how nervous they must be right now...They will do an absolutely fantastic job and don't need my help, but I've written a little opening in case they have a few minutes to fill," The British comedian wrote in a blog post.
Eminem overtakes Lady Gaga as most-liked on Facebook
NEW YORK - It's official -- Eminem is the most "liked" living artist on Facebook. The Detroit rapper overtook Lady Gaga this week for the distinction, currently coming in at over 28,883,000 'likes' as opposed to Gaga's 28,872,000.
Tweeting moms, Web cams. Oscar gets geeky
LOS ANGELES - When Oscar organizers unveiled their promotional campaign, "You're Invited," they weren't kidding -- at least where Web audiences are concerned. This year, more than ever, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has loaded up its Facebook page, Twitter account and website with ways people can watch the world's top film awards and all the festivities that take place around it.
Bidding is hot in Justin Bieber hair auction
LOS ANGELES - A single lock of Justin Bieber's newly-shorn hair is being auctioned off for charity and bids had reached $6,700 on eBay early on Thursday. The 16 year-old Canadian pop idol cut his trademark floppy hair earlier this week, and presented one of the locks to TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
Jennifer Lopez to debut new video on "American Idol"
NEW YORK - "American Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez will premiere the music video for new single "On the Floor" during the singing talent show March 3. The tune, which features Cuban-American rapper Pitbull, debuted this week at No. 40 on Billboard's Pop Songs chart and at No. 26 on the Dance/Club Play Songs chart. The RedOne-produced track is the lead single from Lopez's upcoming seventh album, "Love?," due to be released on March 29 on Island Def Jam.
