Mobile etiquette seen getting worse, not better
NEW YORK - Whether is it texting during dinner, talking on a cellphone in a public restroom or using a laptop while driving, most people think mobile etiquette is getting worse, not better. Ninety one percent of U.S. adults questioned in a new poll by computer innovation company Intel said they have seen people misuse technology, and three quarters think mobile manners have decreased in the past year.
Google targets "content farms" in search tune-up
NEW YORK - Google Inc made substantial changes to its search engine in a direct attack on companies that churn out low-quality stories and videos. The results of the improvements to Google's algorithms used to list search rankings over the past few days affected nearly 12 percent of searches, Google said in a blog post on Thursday.
Verizon Wireless iPhone sales mostly online
BASKING RIDGE, NJ - Verizon Wireless sold more iPhones online than in stores, its top executive told Reuters, disputing a concern that the sparse crowds that greeted the store launch of the Apple Inc <AAPL.O> device signaled low sales. Chief Executive Daniel Mead said in an interview at the company's New Jersey headquarters that demand for the phone has been at record levels since Verizon Wireless began selling the phone on its website February 3.
Game fans snap up Nintendo's 3DS at Japan launch
TOKYO - Game fans hit Japanese stores early on Saturday to be among the first to get their hands on Nintendo's <7974.OS> new 3D-capable game player, but the gadget's sales may be squeezed in the longer term by competition from smartphones and tablets. The 3DS, set to launch in the United States and Europe in a month, has sparked excitement as the first games device to offer glasses-free 3D gaming, and it has the advantage of launching 10 months ahead of Sony's rival Next Generation Portable.
Tweeting moms, Web cams. Oscar gets geeky
LOS ANGELES - When Oscar organizers unveiled their promotional campaign, "You're Invited," they weren't kidding -- at least where Web audiences are concerned. This year, more than ever, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has loaded up its Facebook page, Twitter account and website with ways people can watch the world's top film awards and all the festivities that take place around it.
LinkedIn website working again in China
NEW YORK - Access to the networking site LinkedIn has been restored in China, a day after it was blocked following calls for Middle East-inspired protests in the country. A spokesman for LinkedIn based in the United States said: "We are seeing indications that access to the LinkedIn service is being restored in China. We will continue to monitor the situation."
Chinese workers seek more in Apple supplier's plant poison case
TAIPEI/BEIJING as compensation to each of the 115 workers hit by chemical poisoning but some of the affected Chinese workers said the sum was not enough. Wintek <2384.TW>, owner of the factory in east China's Suzhou industrial park, said it has reserved 10 million yuan for compensation to the workers affected by the chemical hexyl hydride, and will pay more if the illness continues.
Apple takes wraps off new MacBook Pro lineup
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> released its new lineup of MacBook Pro notebook computers, featuring Intel's peppy new processors and graphics chips made by Advanced Micro Devices, helping boost the smaller chipmaker's stock more than 5 percent. The new MacBook Pros will be powered by Intel Corp's <INTC.O> latest dual-core and quad-core chips, which were previously code-named Sandy Bridge and include integrated graphics processing.
Apple succession plan proposal got 30 percent support
SAN FRANCISCO - Almost a third of Apple <AAPL.O> shareholder votes cast were in favor of a proposal to disclose a succession plan for Chief Executive Steve Jobs, underscoring investors' worries over who will replace the visionary leader at the helm. Apple said Wednesday during its annual meeting that the proposal, submitted by the Central Laborers' Pension Fund, had failed to pass. But it did not release details of the vote, raising speculation the proposal had won the backing of a sizable contingent of shareholders.
Google to launch YouTube movie service in UK: report
- Google's <GOOG.O> YouTube plans to launch an unlimited subscription service for movies, similar to Netflix <NFLX.O> and Amazon's <AMZN.O> offering, the New York Post said. The search giant, which has been talking with Hollywood studios for months, is looking to launch the streaming service first in Europe -- particularly the UK -- before expanding to the United States, the paper said citing executives briefed on the plan.
