Dell prepping Windows tablet, refreshing PCs
SAN FRANCISCO - Dell Inc <DELL.O> showed off a tablet device for business users that runs Microsoft's <MSFT.O> Windows software, as the personal computer company continues to push aggressively into the mobile market. Although many analysts believe the current version of Windows is not a good fit for touchscreen tablets, Dell said its commercial customers are looking for the familiarity and security of the Microsoft environment in a more portable package.
Facebook readies room to grow, Google eyes LA
MENLO PARK, Calif - Seven-year-old Facebook is already fast outgrowing its current Silicon Valley abode. The world's largest social network will shift its corporate headquarters starting this summer to a 1-million-square-foot campus in Menlo Park, California, making its second move in less than two years.
Lawmakers want answers on exchange hack attacks
WASHINGTON/NEW YORK - Senior lawmakers demanded answers on Tuesday from regulators and financial exchange operators about computer hacking attacks. Already under investigation by the FBI, the attacks were acknowledged over the weekend by the operator of the Nasdaq Stock Market, Nasdaq OMX Group Inc <NDAQ.O>. Its shares were down 3.2 percent in midafternoon trading.
FCC proposes moving phone subsidy focus to Internet
WASHINGTON - U.S. communications regulators proposed new rules on Tuesday that they say will help bring broadband to all of rural America. The rules would shift government subsidies for landline telephone service to fund the buildout of high-speed Internet services in rural areas.
Should spies spend more time on Twitter?
LONDON - With unrest and chaos apparently having taken Egypt's rulers and Western states by surprise, governments and spies are increasingly looking to social media like Twitter to detect political threats in advance. Protesters who overthrew Tunisian President Ben Ali and brought revolution to the streets of Egypt used sites such as Twitter and Facebook to coordinate action. While few credit social media with causing the uprisings, the speed of instant communication it allows is believed to have accelerated events. The same was true for British student protests late last year and a broader, rising tide of anti-austerity actions.
Novel health devices could see faster reviews
WASHINGTON - Health regulators are seeking to speed up their reviews of promising medical devices and boost research for new technologies in hopes of getting novel products to market faster. The initiative targets "devices that are true pioneering technologies and that have the potential to revolutionize patient care or health care delivery," the Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday.
Cellphone security threats rise sharply: McAfee
LONDON - Cellphone security threats rose sharply last year as a proliferation of Internet-enabled mobile devices like smartphones and tablets provided new opportunities for cybercriminals, security software maker McAfee <MFE.N> said. In its fourth-quarter threat report, released on Tuesday, McAfee said the number of pieces of new cellphone malware it found in 2010 rose 46 percent over 2009's level.
Analysis: Politics works against Canadian telecom reforms
TORONTO/OTTAWA - Foreign investors face a long wait before Canada opens up its telecommunications sector as Ottawa eyes a possible election this year and battles the industry's regulator. The minority Conservative government has a long-stated commitment to loosening restrictions on foreign involvement in telecommunications, but it's now dragging its feet.
Nokia software choice in focus as Elop takes stage
HELSINKI - Expectations are high when Nokia's <NOK1V.HE> new Chief Executive Stephen Elop takes stage on Friday at an investor event in London. The world's biggest cellphone maker warned on January 27 of a grim start to 2011, but its shares quickly recovered steep losses after Elop flagged possible change of software strategy.
