"Managing director, PIA, Aijaz Haroon has resigned," Mukhtar told a press conference in Islamabad, with union representatives alongside him. "Now a new managing director will be appointed." The managing director's departure was a key demand of staff, along with the cancellation of management plans they said would farm out lucrative European and US routes to Turkish Airlines so the company could avoid bankruptcy. Employees have been on picket lines since Tuesday, resulting in around 400 flights being cancelled and 60,000 passengers stranded, costing the ailing airline around $22 million. "We have accepted demands of the PIA employees, who wanted their managing director to step down, employees suspended by him to be re-instated and a memorandum of understanding signed with a foreign airline to be declared null and void," said Mukhtar. He said neither he nor other ministers had seen the agreement with Turkish Airlines, adding "the government will not take any decision which is not in the interest of Pakistan and the airline itself." Suhail Baluch, president of the Pakistan Airlines Pilots Association, who represented the PIA employees in the talks, said: "We are going to end our strike and start normal flight operations by midnight today (Friday)." "The government has accepted most of our demands including reinstatement of suspended employees and assured to accept the remaining ones," Baluch told AFP. PIA said at least 400 flights had been cancelled since the strike began on Tuesday, 75 of them international journeys with destinations including Britain, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. The airline, which is on the verge of going bust, provides the only direct services from Pakistan to Britain, Europe and North America. Earlier on Friday, police baton-charged PIA employees, detaining 20 of them, following violent protests at the Karachi's Quaid-e-Azam International Airport as talks began in Islamabad.
