More than 1,000 people in HK protest against war on Gaza
AFP - 1 hour 15 minutes ago
HONG KONG (AFP) - - More than 1,000 students and ethnic minorities took to the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday in a protest organised on social networking website Facebook to condemn Israel's attack on Gaza.
The group, holding placards and banners, marched from Victoria Park to the US Consulate General demanding the US stop supporting Israel's deadliest ever assault on the impoverished Gaza Strip.
"We are not here to blame. We just want both sides to stop fighting on humanitarian grounds," said Christopher Ma, a student at University of Hong Kong who initiated the protest with his classmate, Felix Lam.
"We want Hong Kong people to know what is happening out there," Ma told AFP.
The group also called on the authorities to open the borders to humanitarian aids for the civilians in Gaza.
Ma and Lam said they were especially disappointed with the US after it abstained in a vote for a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
Mohamad Zaiq Ali, of the Hong Kong Islamic Youth Association, one of the many Islamic groups which joined the march, said the minorities felt very sad for the helpless civilians in Gaza.
"The US is intervening in every other country's affairs. Why don't they get involved in Gaza? It seems to be a message saying that they are in full support of Israel's continued attack on the civilians."
The war on Gaza, sparked by Hamas' rocket attacks on southern Israel, has over the last two weeks killed 850 people.
The conflict has led to worldwide pro-Palestinian demonstrations, including rallies in Europe that drew tens of thousands of protesters.
