Ledger leads foreign legion at Golden Globes
AFP - Monday, January 12
BEVERLY HILLS, California, (AFP) - - Late Australian actor Heath Ledger earned a posthumous Golden Globe here as a foreign legion dominated the early honors at the star-studded awards show.
Ledger, who died of an accidental drug overdose last January, was honored with the best supporting actor award for his iconic portrayal of Joker in Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight."
The film's director, Christopher Nolan, collected the award in place of the tragic 28-year-old, who is heavy favorite to win in the same category at next month's Oscars.
"For any of us to enjoy his performance he will be eternally missed, but he'll never be forgotten," Nolan told guests at the Beverly Hilton hotel.
Other early winners on Sunday included British duo Kate Winslet and Sally Hawkins, who won the supporting actress and comedy actress awards for their roles in "The Reader" and "Happy-Go-Lucky" respectively.
Winslet, 33, who had been nominated at the Globes on five previous occasions, beat out Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona"), Marisa Tomei ("The Wrestler") and "Doubt" co-stars Amy Adams and Viola Davis.
"I have a habit of not winning things," Winslet said in her acceptance speech. "I'm in shock ... To my children who are watching on TV: look: I won!"
Winslet also paid tribute to the film's director Stephen Daldry as well as co-producers Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella, who both died before the film was completed.
Winslet is also in the running to add to her trophy haul later Sunday -- she is nominated in the best actress category for her performance in "Revolutionary Road," directed by her husband Sam Mendes.
Other early winners included Disney/Pixar movie "Wall-E", which picked up the best animated film prize.
The film, about a garbage-collecting robot left on Earth after humans have abandoned the planet, saw off competition from "Kung-Fu Panda" and "Bolt."
After a disastrous event last year that was reduced to a celebrity-free zone by the entertainment industry's writers strike, this year's Globes red carpet parade read like a who's who of the movie industry's A-list.
Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep are just a few of the Hollywood heavyweights vying for honors at the Globes, second only in prestige to the Academy Awards which take place on February 22.
Pitt is up for best actor for his performance as a man who ages in reverse in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," which along with "Frost/Nixon" and "Doubt" goes into the event with five nominations.
"Benjamin Button" and "Frost/Nixon" are regarded as strong Oscars contenders with nods in the key categories of best drama, best director and best actor.
However, awards season pundits believe "Benjamin Button" could be pipped for best drama honors by "Slumdog Millionaire."
Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes -- which are chosen by around 80 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association -- have separate best picture awards for dramas and musicals.
In the past four years the Globes have failed to accurately predict the best picture winner at the Academy Awards, but overall two-thirds of best picture Oscar winners had first received a Golden Globe.
