National Satellite Mistakenly Shows California-Sized Ice Mass Disappear
February 21, 2009 11:36 a.m. EST
David Goodhue - AHN Reporter
Miami, FL (AHN) - A glitch in a satellite sensor of the U.S. agency that tracks Arctic Sea ice mistakenly led researchers to underestimate the amount of existing sea ice by about 193,000 square miles - a chunk about the size of California.
The error, which the National Snow and Ice Data Center is calling a "sensor drift," began around January and started a "slowly growing underestimation of Arctic sea ice extent."
Disappearing Arctic sea ice is cited by followers of climate change theory as an indicator of the effects of global warming.
The NSIDC announced that it has removed the data that showed the California-sized ice chunk disappearing, and is "investigating alternative data sources that will provide correct results."
"It is not clear when we will have data back online, but we are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.," the NSIDC said on its website.
