ADVERTISEMENT The poll by the Kyodo News agency found public support for Aso was down from the 19.2 percent of the agency's last survey in January. The disapproval rate rose to 70.9 percent from 70.2 percent. Since taking office in September last year, Aso has been under pressure to pull Japan out of recession. The prime minister has repeatedly said the top priority of his government is to ensure a recovery for the world's second largest economy. In January, Japan passed an economy-boosting budget that includes a controversial cash payout to taxpayers totaling 2 trillion yen ($22 billion). The government hopes the cash handout will stimulate sagging consumer spending. But the Kyodo survey found nearly 80 percent of respondents said they expected little from Aso's government to shore up the ailing economy. The International Monetary Fund recently estimated Japan's economy will shrink by 2.6 percent in 2009 following a 0.3-percent contraction in 2008. Aso is also facing growing calls from opposition lawmakers to hold elections immediately. Elections in the powerful lower house of parliament can be held at any time, but must take place by September. The leader of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan, Ichiro Ozawa, has speculated the polls could come as early as in April. The Kyodo poll showed 43 percent of respondents said they will vote for the opposition party in lower house elections. Only 23 percent said they will vote for Aso's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, which has governed Japan for virtually all of the past 54 years. The Kyodo survey consisted of random telephone interviews with 1,477 households with one or more eligible voters between Feb 7-8. It said 1,022 of those called responded. It gave no margin of error.
