North Korea officials seize Kim biography in Myanmar: author
YANGON (AFP) - – North Korean embassy officials have seized hundreds of copies of an unauthorised biography of their reclusive leader Kim Jong-Il in Myanmar, the author said Friday.
Hein Latt, 62, a well-known Myanmar writer, told AFP he had been asked by North Korean diplomats in Yangon earlier this month to withdraw his Burmese language book "Kim Jong Il: North Korea's Dear Leader" from sale.
"They said this book is not good for our two countries' relations. They asked me not to continue distribution as the facts in this book were wrong," said Hein Latt, adding that he had handed 310 copies over to the North Koreans.
Hein Latt, whose biography of Kim had sold 700 copies before it was pulled from the shelves, said the North Korean embassy might not have liked its reference to two other books published in the United States.
"They said officially published books from their country should be used for reference if we want to write about their leader. They said the other books, which were not published in their country, were false and inaccurate," he said.
The author said his biography had been approved by Myanmar officials for publication. It was unclear whether the North Korean diplomats were acting with Myanmar's authorisation.
Hein Latt has translated and written about 90 books, including more than 20 biographies of world leaders, among them US President Barack Obama, Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
"Nothing like this has happened to me before. I just wanted my books to increase political knowledge among readers," he said.
North Korea's Foreign Minister Pak Ui Chun is currently visiting the military-ruled country and met with Prime Minister Thein Sein Friday, a Myanmar official said, asking not to be named.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week expressed worries about military ties between the two autocratic nations, following reports that Myanmar may be seeking nuclear cooperation with Pyongyang.
