Home  |  News Briefs  |  U.S.  |  World   |  Celeb Buzz  |  Entertainment  |  Sports  |  Business  |  Health  |  Sci / Tech  |  Politics  |  Weird & Offbeat     Obama Freezes Salaries Of Top Aides, Tightens Lobbyist Rules On First Day In Office January 21, 2009 4:01 p.m. EST Julie Farby - AHN Reporter Washington, DC (AHN) - In his first day in the White House Oval Office, President Barack Obama announced his decision to freeze the salaries of high-paid aides, saying the steps "represent a clean break from business as usual." Obama's made the announcement during a ceremony in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building to swear in his staff, instituting new limits on lobbyists and freezing the salaries of about 100 White House employees, who make over $100,000 a year. "Families are tightening their belts, and so should Washington," Obama said. The pay freeze introduced by Obama will keep salaries at current levels for the roughly 100 White House employees who make over $100,000 a year, including the high-profile jobs of White House chief of staff, national security adviser and press secretary. Obama also introduced new lobbying rules which he called tighter "than under any other administration in history." The new more stringent guidelines are aimed at reducing lobbyist-influence on his administration and in Washington in general. "The new rules on lobbying alone, no matter how tough, are not enough to fix a broken system in Washington," he said. "That's why I'm also setting rules that govern not just lobbyists but all those who have been selected to serve in my administration."
