News Corp weighs options for MySpace
NEW YORK - News Corporation <NWSA.O> Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey said his company is open to a sale of the beleaguered site MySpace although they are pleased with its new direction as a social entertainment destination. A sale or partnership are two of a number of options the company would consider for the once valuable social network site, before being usurped by Facebook.
Microsoft in talks for new TV service: sources
NEW YORK - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> has held talks with media companies to license TV networks for a new online pay-television subscription service through devices such as its Xbox video game console, two people familiar with the plans told Reuters. The software giant's possible push into the television business comes as Google Inc <GOOG.O>, Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and Netflix have jostled for a seat at the table of television's future -- a main topic of discussion at the Reuters Global Media Summit to be held this week.
Supreme Court rejects Tiffany trademark appeal vs eBay
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court said on Monday that it rejected an appeal by Tiffany & Co <TIF.N> arguing that eBay Inc <EBAY.O> should be held liable for trademark infringement for selling counterfeit goods on its website. The case has been widely viewed as a major legal challenge in the United States to Internet companies such as eBay, Google Inc <GOOG.O> and others that host services that other people provide. They have argued they should not be held responsible for users' trademark violations.
Retailers hope Cyber Monday keeps shoppers buying
NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Retailers are hoping to cash in on Cyber Monday, one of the biggest days for Internet commerce, after strong weekend online sales. The Monday after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday was dubbed Cyber Monday five years ago to get consumers to focus on online shopping. But retailers have been increasingly offering online deals on Thanksgiving Day and over the holiday weekend.
U.S. seizes websites in fake goods crackdown
WASHINGTON - Law enforcement officials said on Monday they had shut down 82 websites selling thousands of counterfeit and pirated goods in a move timed with the start of the online holiday shopping season. "As of today -- what is known as 'Cyber Monday' and billed as the busiest online shopping day of the year -- anyone attempting to access one of these websites using its domain name will no longer be able to make a purchase," U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters.
Few smartphone owners are loyal to their brand: survey
LONDON - The booming smartphone market shows no sign of slowing but manufacturers will have to fight hard to keep their customers as smartphone owners show little loyalty to their current brands, a GfK survey shows. The survey, to be published later on Monday, found that 56 percent of smartphone owners in key global markets were keeping their options open about which phone they would buy next, with only Apple <AAPL.O> commanding a significant degree of loyalty.
LG Display, 4 others face EU antitrust fines: sources
BRUSSELS - Five companies, including LG Display <034220.KS> and Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp are set to be fined by EU antitrust regulators next week for fixing prices of display panels used in consumer devices, four sources said on Tuesday. The European Commission, which handles EU regulatory affairs, charged the companies in July last year with breaching EU laws on restrictive business practices. Several other regulators around the world also investigated the sector.
Gartner cuts PC shipment forecasts for 2010, 2011
HELSINKI - Research firm Gartner has cut its forecasts for global computers shipments in 2010 and 2011, citing weaker demand as many customers choose a tablet computer over a PC, it said on Monday. It said it expected PC shipments this year to rise 14.3 percent to 352 million units, year-on-year, and in 2011 by 15.9 percent. It had previously predicted the growth to be 17.9 percent in 2010 and 18.1 percent in 2011.
Amazon.com looks to enter new markets: report
BANGALORE - U.S. Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> plans to expand in new markets by revamping its international e-commerce platform, the Financial Times said. Amazon, which operates retail websites in six countries apart from the U.S., has set up a new team that will help translate content into different languages, the Times said.
Supreme Court to hear Microsoft appeal on i4i patent
WASHINGTON - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> scored a victory in a long-running patent case by persuading the Supreme Court to hear its appeal against a record-breaking $290 million jury verdict for infringing a patent held by a small Canadian software firm. The result of the Supreme Court's review of the three-year old case, which is expected by the middle of next year, could alter the way patents are enforced in the United States by making it easier to challenge their validity.
