DHAKA (Reuters) - The main opposition party in Bangladesh, denouncing the eviction of its leader from her home, staged a nation-wide strike on Tuesday, disrupting transport and shutting down most businesses and offices.
The day-long strike was the second led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since the government two weeks ago removed its leader, former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, from the house in which she had lived for decades.
A special court, meanwhile, indicted Khaleda's younger son Arafat Rahman and an accomplice on charges of laundering 220 million taka ($3 million), a court registrar told reporters.
The trial will open on January 4 in the defendants' absence. Arafat, on parole, is undergoing medical treatment in Thailand while his accomplice is on the run, the registrar said.
The new strike followed a night of violent protests by opposition members, who set ablaze at least 15 vehicles and clashed with police after the Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal against Khaleda's eviction.
The BNP said police had detained "thousands" of its activists over the past few days to try to foil the strike as
authorities laid on a heavy security presence. Police said they were carrying out detentions to protect public property.
"We are entrusted to provide security and protect public property," said a police spokesman. "We cannot allow them to burn vehicles."
Sporadic violence was reported in the capital and in other districts on Tuesday.
The government urged residents to ignore the strike call.
Trading took place as usual at the Dhaka stock exchange but work at the country's main Chittagong port was partially disrupted, brokers and traders said. Train, ferry and air services operated normally, but long-distance buses were halted.
Earlier this month, Khaleda was expelled from her sprawling house within the Dhaka military barracks, leased to her after her husband, former army chief and president Ziaur Rahman, was killed in an abortive coup in 1981.
She has made no public comment since her eviction.
The government of Khaleda's arch rival, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, canceled Khaleda's house lease last year. Khaleda took legal action to keep her home but lost her final battle on Monday at the Supreme Court.
Khaleda left her house on November 13 and her party staged a countrywide strike a day later in protest.
BNP leaders said Tuesday's strike was also intended to denounce the government's failure to tackle power and gas shortages and ensure good governance.
