Troops patrolling Tibetan town in northwest China
By ANITA CHANG,Associated Press Writer AP - Monday, March 23
BEIJING - Armed police patrolled the streets of a Tibetan community in northwest China on Monday, residents said, following reports that six people were arrested after a crowd of hundreds _ including monks _ attacked a police station.

All was quiet Monday in Ragya, a town in Qinghai province's Golog prefecture, two days after the violence at the police station, where the official Xinhua News Agency said policemen and government staff were assaulted.
Three residents who spoke to The Associated Press by phone said security forces were patrolling the area but gave widely varying estimates of troop levels, ranging from 30 to 500.
"The monastery is quiet and there are no police stationed there," said a man who lives near the ungated Ragya monastery. The monastery was home to a monk who was thought to have committed suicide after being taken into police custody, an incident that set off the violence at the police station.
The resident, surnamed Huang, would not give his full name as is common among many Chinese. He added that 400 to 500 troops began patrolling the city on Saturday after the attack.
Police arrested six people accused of involvement in the attack that included several hundred protesters, Xinhua said, and another 89 people turned themselves in. All but two of those in custody were monks, it said. The status of those taken into custody was unclear Monday.
Xinhua said nearly 100 monks from Ragya Monastery attacked the police station.
Security in Tibetan areas of China has been tight in recent weeks as Beijing seeks to head off trouble related to sensitive anniversaries this month. March 14 marked the one-year anniversary of anti-government riots in Lhasa, Tibet's regional capital, while March 17 marked 50 years since the Dalai Lama escaped into exile in India after Chinese troops crushed a Tibetan uprising.
Although the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, has said that Chinese restrictions on Tibet's religious practices have resulted in a "cultural genocide," Beijing insists it has bettered the lives of the people by improving the economy and developing the remote Himalayan region.
A former resident of the area who now lives in exile in Dharmsala, India, said the protesters were angry because they believed a 28-year-old monk named Tashi Sangpo jumped into a river to commit suicide after being interrogated by police for allegedly unfurling a Tibetan flag.
The monk left the police station with the excuse that he had to use the bathroom, then jumped into the Yellow River, the source has said on condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisals against his family still living in China. The body has not been found.
The exile, who said he received the information from people in Ragya, said 500 monks from the monastery protested outside the local administration office and the group swelled to about 2,000 as others from the village joined.
He said Tashi Sangpo unfurled a Tibetan flag on the roof of the monastery on March 10, the anniversary of the start of the 1959 failed Tibetan revolt and distributed pamphlets urging protests against Chinese rule. The Tibetan flag is banned in China.
It was difficult to independently verify details of the situation in Ragya. Communication is spotty in the area and residents are reluctant to speak with journalists for fear of official retaliation.
People who answered the phone at provincial, county and local government offices and public security bureaus said no one was immediately available to answer questions. Phone numbers for the Ragya monastery and police station were not listed.
