Americans Vactioning Closer To Home Memorial Day Weekend

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The estimated distance for vacation travel this Memorial Day weekend is down from a year ago as more Americans head toward destinations within driving distance.
As U.S. workers worry about job security and their personal finances taking more expensive vacations with long periods away from the office has become less desirable; opting for extended weekend getaways instead.
This trend generally means vacationers will travel shorter distances, which also lends itself to driving to those destinations.
A new AAA survey estimates that 32.4 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home over Memorial Day with vast majority, 83 percent, driving to their destinations.
"Destinations that rely heavily on tourists who live more than a day's drive away will probably see a drop in business this summer. Meanwhile, tourist attractions that rely mostly on local and regional visitors could thrive," said John A. Challenger, chief executive officer of business coaching consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., in a report.
The large discount in the price of gasoline compared to the Memorial Day holiday last year has also made it cheaper to drive this year, a welcome outcome for cash strapped Americans.
The average retail price for gasoline has dropped nearly 40 percent to $2.31 a gallon coming into this Memorial Day holiday compared to last year, according to data collected by the Energy Information Administration.
An increase in vacation travel by car is not only expected to impact this holiday, but to be the trend throughout the summer.
The Air Transport Association of America estimates a 7 percent drop in U.S. airline passengers through the June 1 to Aug 31, 2009 period, compared to a year ago.
The ATA reported a 6.3 percent decline in U.S. airline passenger traffic in April, with a decline in May anticipated as well.
