Two officials, who asked not to be identified, confirmed the deaths to AFP. The nationalities of the foreigners could not be officially confirmed, although Singapore's foreign ministry said one of the dead may have come from the city-state. Late Wednesday the government said four people were killed and three injured in "a big explosion" at 11:40 am (0740 GMT) when two containers holding fireworks caught fire. "Investigators reported that the main cause was some carelessness during the process of transport," said a government statement. Witnesses said they heard the blast before noon near Hanoi's My Dinh Stadium, where the city's 1,000th anniversary celebrations are to culminate in a fireworks ceremony on Sunday. The ceremony will still take place, VNExpress news site reported. The explosion sent large chunks of metal debris flying. Windows at the nearby Vietnam Sport Hospital -- where victims were initially taken -- and apartment blocks about 200 metres (yards) from the blast site were shattered or blown out. A woman who lives on the sixth floor of an apartment building in the area said she was cooking when she heard "big explosions" and rushed to her balcony where she saw a plume of white smoke. "The smoke was not like when someone burned things. Many people rushed down to the street to watch. The smoke came from the stadium area. There were about six or seven explosions," said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous. Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said local authorities informed its embassy that "a Singaporean woman could be one of four fatalities" after an explosion occurred in the vicinity of My Dinh Stadium. "The embassy is working to verify this, and to ascertain if any other Singaporeans are affected," it said. Photographs posted on state-linked Tuoi Tre and VietnamNet news websites showed a large cloud of thick smoke in the air before the reports were removed temporarily from the Internet. As reports were suspended in state-linked media, Facebook and other social networking sites continued to spread pictures, video and discussion about the blast. Only in the early evening did state-linked media resume coverage. AFP reporters saw what appeared to be a twisted and blackened transport container on a grassy field about 100 metres to the side of the stadium. Uniformed police and several men in civilian clothes walked among a scaffolding-like structure which had collapsed on the ground, and workers in green vests carried away a large piece of metal. Other large chunks of debris appeared to have been blasted about 100 metres from the scene, which dozens of people observed from behind a fence. Students from a nearby sports training facility said several ambulances were sent to the scene. The government said the fireworks were imported by Interserco, a Hanoi firm. "This is an unfortunate incident but it will not affect the security work during the coming grand anniversary," the government statement said, quoting Lieutenant General Nguyen Duc Nhanh, director of Hanoi police. Nobody at Interserco was able to comment. By late afternoon, music and drumming sounds came from inside the stadium and a lion danced at the front entrance near a giant "1,000" sign as preparations for the weekend celebration continued.
