Google launches music search with Lala, iLike
LOS ANGELES - Google Inc <GOOG.O> on Wednesday partnered with Web services LaLa and MySpace's iLike to give music fans an easier way to find, sample and buy songs on the Internet, expanding its music industry footprint. The global Web search leader will provide users who want to sample a song with a pop-up box that will play at least a 30-second segment -- in some cases the entire song -- provided by iLike and Lala, which will then offer links to purchase the music.
Crucial holiday season arrives for video game industry
SAN FRANCISCO - The holiday season is crunch time for video game publishers, who are pinning their hopes on a slew of big releases to make up for lackluster sales this year. Price cuts from home console makers Nintendo Co <7974.OS>, Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> and Sony Corp <6758.T> had been expected to help boost software sales, but the results have been less than heartening so far.
Google Voice call blocking limited, company says
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> said on Wednesday it restricts calls to less than 100 U.S. telephone numbers with its Google Voice service, responding to a query from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. Google Voice has been surrounded in controversy since its launch in March.
Motorola's Droid has Google navigation features
NEW YORK - Motorola Inc's new Droid phone will be the first to use navigation software from Google Inc, in a direct challenge to GPS device makers Garmin and TomTom. The Droid will go on sale on November 6 at Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile service provider, which said it will promote the phone with its biggest marketing campaign ever. It will cost $199 for customers who commit to a two-year service contract, Verizon Wireless said on Wednesday.
Google drives into navigation market
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> is adding Garmin Ltd <GRMN.O> and TomTom <TOM2.AS> to its growing list of rivals as the Internet search giant weaves technology for driving directions into new versions of its smartphone software. Google said its new Google Maps Navigation product will provide real-time, turn-by-turn directions directly within cell phones that are based on the new version of its Android software.
Digital cinema still a work in progress
ORLANDO - The movie industry seems almost embarrassed about the prospect of promising too much too soon regarding digital cinema. Too late.
Disney launching iPhone, iPod touch applications
LOS ANGELES - Walt Disney Co <DIS.N> is launching free iPhone and iPod touch applications, giving fans access to Disney content and interactive features anywhere. Disney.com, part of the Disney Interactive Media Group, said it will offer users of the popular Apple Inc <AAPL.O> devices items like the new "Click2Life" feature that lets fans take pictures of images from the Disney.com Web site, and eventually in the physical world, and unlock exclusive content.
UK threatens Web access block in piracy fight
WATFORD, England - Britain is to push ahead with a law to clamp down on illegal file sharing, that would start with a series of warning letters and could result in repeat offenders losing their Internet connection. The proposals, which were set out by Business Secretary Peter Mandelson, have followed a high-profile campaign from artists such as Lily Allen and James Blunt, and follow France's move to ban illegal peer-to-peer sharers for up to a year.
Facebook challenges financial regulators: FINRA
NEW YORK said.
Google Voice lets users keep phone number
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> has introduced a new feature that will allow consumers to use its Google Voice service without switching to a special phone number, potentially broadening the appeal of the nascent, and controversial, service. Google said late Monday that new users of its service will be able to have the calls that they don't answer forwarded to a special Google Voice electronic mailbox, essentially bypassing the voicemail provided by their phone carriers.
