Japan opposition leader renews vow to take power
AFP - 1 hour 7 minutes ago
TOKYO (AFP) - - Japanese opposition leader Ichiro Ozawa Sunday attacked Prime Minister Taro Aso's government for failing to tackle the worsening economy and renewed his vow to take power in this year's elections.
"The administration neglects its responsibility and its mission," said Ozawa at the annual convention of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ).
"The longer it stays in power, the longer people suffer in this country," he said. "There is no other way but for the administration to step down."
Aso's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) also held its annual convention Sunday, in an intensifying showdown before they face off in the general elections, which must be held by September.
"I have the full confidence that the LDP is the only party that can iron out responsible measures for the economic crisis," Aso told party members.
"I will do my very best towards the elections," he said.
Aso's LDP has ruled Japan for most of the past half century, but is now facing a crisis as the leader's popularity rating sagged to around 20 percent while the premier has failed to impress voters with his economic measures.
Last week the LDP lost a senior lawmaker, Yoshimi Watanabe, who had pressed Aso to call snap elections to win a mandate.
Watanabe, former minister for administrative reforms and the son of a well-known foreign minister, denounced Aso as an "old-guard crony" as he announced to leave the LDP.
Aso also suffered fresh embarrassment last week when a popular weekly magazine accused a member of his cabinet of having an affair with a married woman.
Experts expect the LDP to face a tough battle if it hopes to win a lower house election, with the resurgent opposition already in control of the upper house after an election in mid-2007.
