ADVERTISEMENT The chief military observer of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG), Bangladeshi Major General Anwar Hussain, left the main Abkhaz city of Sukhumi earlier in the day, a UN official in Abkhazia said. "He left Sukhumi airport at 9:00 am (0500 GMT) and flew to Tbilisi," the official, who asked not to be named, told AFP. His departure drew the curtain on a mission that started in August 1993 to verify the ceasefire agreement that ended the 1990s conflict between the central government in Tbilisi and Abkhaz separatists. The mission was given new meaning in the wake of Russia's war with Georgia last year, which led to Moscow's recognition of Abkhazia and another pro-Moscow rebel region, South Ossetia, as independent states. The mission had most recently been made up of 120 military observers and 11 police. It was not clear at what pace the observers had left. The departure of the mission had been forced by Russia's veto of a UN Security Council resolution last month which would have extended its mandate. The veto meant the UN mission officially ended on June 15. But it is only now that the observers are quitting the region, in line with usual practice. A UN official in Tbilisi confirmed the mission had not carried out any patrolling or reporting since June 15. Russia said in June that it had used its veto power because the text of the resolution reaffirmed a commitment to the territorial integrity of Georgia and to Tbilisi's sovereignty over Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Moscow's UN envoy rejected the text as unacceptable, saying that it would be "denying the existence of Abkhazia as a state." But Western powers, which back Tbilisi, insisted there was no room for compromise on this issue. "It is unfortunate that they (the observers) are leaving. Their leaving is not our decision, it is a result of Russias destructive policy," Temur Yakobashvili, Georgia's minister for reintegration, told AFP. On his visit to Russia last month, US President Barack Obama made no secret of the divisions between Moscow and the West, bluntly saying that Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. Meanwhile, a US warship began joint exercises with Georgian vessels in the Black Sea on Wednesday in the first such manoeuvres since the former Soviet republic's war with Russia. While the exercises are with the coastguard -- part of Georgia's interior ministry and not its military -- they risk inflaming tensions with Russia, already roused by US support for Tbilisi and earlier US naval visits. Russia has repeatedly criticised the United States for using battleships to deliver aid to Georgia, questioning Washington's motives for visiting an area traditionally dominated by its own Black Sea Fleet.
