ADVERTISEMENT White will take over as senior pastor at Without Walls International Church, replacing her ex-husband, Randy White, who is resigning because of ill health. The couple started the church, initially known as the South Tampa Christian Center, in 1991. "I'm not visiting," Paula White said at a service Sunday. "I'm home. I'm here. I look forward to leading you into the place that God has designated and designed for us." The couple announced they were divorcing in 2007, after the church came under financial scrutiny for the couple's failure to repay a $170,000 loan from an elderly widow, money borrowed in 1995 as a down payment on a house. After the split, Randy White remained as senior pastor while Paula concentrated on her national ministry. The church struggled to fill its 4,000-seat sanctuary after the split. Paula White told The Tampa Tribune that "the time feels right" for her to return to the church regularly. She said she and her ex-husband "both needed some time to heal." In November 2007, U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, announced an investigation into spending and management practices at six large Christian ministries, including Without Walls. The investigation is ongoing. ___ http://www.withoutwalls.org/ ___ ACLU demands changes after jail removes Bible verses from letters to inmate RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Prisoner and free-speech advocates are demanding a written guarantee that inmates at a Virginia jail can receive letters containing religious material after a prisoner said his mail was censored. The American Civil Liberties Union, its Virginia chapter and several other civil, religious and prisoner rights organizations sent a letter to Rappahannock Regional Jail Superintendent Joseph Higgs Jr. requesting that the issue be resolved without litigation. Anna Williams, whose son was detained at the jail for several months, said officials cut out entire sections of several letters she sent to her son that contained Bible verses or religious material. She said the jail cited prohibitions on Internet material and religious material sent from home. "Obviously for security issues the right to practice religion while incarcerated is a balancing act to some extent, but that can't possibly apply to a mother sending religious passages to her son," said Kent Willis, executive director of the ACLU of Virginia. Higgs said in a written statement that the letter prompted him to initiate an internal investigation. The U.S. Supreme Court has said that inmates have the right to practice religion as long as it doesn't interfere with their other obligations or create a security risk. ___ http://www.aclu.org/ ___ Birmingham 'religion' billboard brings debate BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ A billboard that was put up by the Alabama Freethought Association is causing debate, with some saying the sign reading "Imagine No Religion" is offensive and should be removed. The billboard along Interstate 20 near Pell City was placed there by the association as part of a national campaign by the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The background of the sign is of a stained glass window with the words sung by John Lennon in the song "Imagine" on top. Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the foundation in Madison, Wis., said the sign will be up for a month. The group had wanted a billboard near the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, but Lamar Advertising declined. "We got censored by Lamar," she said. "It was offensive to me," said Tom Traylor, general manager of Lamar Advertising in Birmingham. "We have the autonomy to decide what's in the best interests of our company and what's offensive. I don't think it was the kind of message we wanted to stand behind. "You have to know what area of the country you're in," he said. "A heavy percent of our population is Christian. That's who we cater to." Freethought association member Pat Cleveland of Talladega said she's gotten about 50 irate calls about the billboard, but that the group's intentions aren't hostile. The Talladega Daily Home reported that a petition drive has been started to take it down. ___ http://www.ffrf.org/ ___ Protesters stage "kiss-in" near Mormon temple SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ About 100 people gathered near the Mormon church's downtown temple to stage a "kiss-in" protesting the treatment of two gay men who were detained by security guards on a plaza owned by the church and later cited by police for trespassing. Matt Aune said he and his partner, Derek Jones, were confronted by guards after they hugged and kissed on the plaza. Former Salt Lake City Councilwoman Deeda Seed helped organize Sunday's kiss-in, which occurred on public property. The Salt Lake Tribune reported on its Web site that heterosexual and gay couples exchanged small kisses and pecks at the plaza's south entrance, which faces downtown. Church security was present, but the Deseret News of Salt Lake City reported that no altercations occurred. ___ http://www.lds.org/ ___ Russian Orthodox museum in Anchorage to close its doors ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) _ A museum that chronicled the history of the Russian Orthodox church in Alaska with artifacts and artwork dating back as long as a century will close its doors in August. Low attendance and expensive bills have doomed the Russian Orthodox Museum in Anchorage. The church that operates the museum decided it is time to close the doors. Artifacts will be returned to the churches that donated them. Rev. Mikel Bock said the closure has to be done because the diocese is hurting because of the economy. ___ http://www.russianorthodoxmuseum.com/ ___ Email Story IM Story Printable View Blog This Sign in to recommend this article » 0 users recommend Related Articles: World Sotomayor declines to talk about abortion viewsAP - Thursday, July 16 Politics, family intertwined for women politiciansAP - Wednesday, July 15 Democrat claims US House seat in Calif.AP - Wednesday, July 15 Ohio executes trucker who went on killing spreeAP - Wednesday, July 15 IMF: West Bank economy can grow if Israel eases upAP - Wednesday, July 15 Most Popular – World Viewed Jackson wasn't ready for London comeback: father Bangladesh crackdown on 'kings of genies' Jackson 'best father' ever, daughter tells the world Miniskirts, cleavage upset male SKoreans: survey Coroners seek records from Jackson skin doctor View Complete List » Search: Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Top Stories Most Popular Copyright © 2009 Yahoo!
