"Glee" cast to get Hollywood diversity award
LOS ANGELES - The cast of the quirky Fox TV show "Glee" will be presented with a Hollywood diversity award in November for their portrayal of a group of teen oddballs with a passion for song and dance. The Diversity Awards committee said on Saturday that the "Glee" cast had won the favorite new diverse ensemble cast award for 2009.
Judge orders trial in Anna Nicole Smith's death
LOS ANGELES - A California judge on Friday ordered the boyfriend and two doctors of former Playboy model and actress Anna Nicole Smith to stand trial on charges of fueling her addiction to prescription drugs. Smith, whose life as a fashion model, television star and young wife of an elderly oil billionaire was fodder for tabloids and celebrity magazines, died from a prescription drug overdose in February 2007 at age 39.
Seacrest stalker with knife arrested at E! offices
LOS ANGELES - A knife-wielding man suspected of stalking "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest was stopped by security guards on Friday at the offices of E! entertainment television and turned over to police, the cable network reported on its website. Detective Gus Villanueva of the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Reuters that police detained a man at the E! building, where Seacrest also works, but he gave no further details and said the man had not been formally arrested.
With new confidence, Underwood eager to "Play On"
NASHVILLE - Carrie Underwood just spent several hours sitting in Audio Productions -- a Music Row radio and TV production facility -- doing interviews with radio stations across the country, but she looks fresh and relaxed as she prepares for her final chat of the day. She talks with the engineer about how excited she is to hear Miranda Lambert's new CD, "Revolution." And when someone offers to give her a copy, Underwood sweetly protests, "Oh, no, I'm going to buy it."
Music legends rock the Hall of Fame
NEW YORK - Rock 'n' roll royalty held court on Thursday night as Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Sting and other music legends staged a marathon show to celebrate the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th anniversary. The six-hour concert at Madison Square Garden included over 50 songs and also featured performances by Crosby, Stills and Nash, blues great B.B. King, Smokey Robinson, Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor, Jackson Browne and others.
Actor Dennis Hopper battling prostate cancer
LOS ANGELES - Actor Dennis Hopper is suffering from prostate cancer and canceling all travel plans to focus on his treatment, his manager told media on Thursday. Hopper, 73, was released from the hospital earlier this month after his manager, Sam Maydew, said he checked in with flu-like symptoms during a trip to New York and was treated for dehydration.
TV networks hold their own in new season
LOS ANGELES - Five weeks into the new 2009-10 television season, three of the four major U.S. networks are seeing surprisingly bigger audiences than last year and fewer embarrassing flops. Networks are pulling in guest stars including Jimmy Fallon, Heather Locklear and Mandy Patinkin to boost ratings, and NBC is taking its "The Biggest Loser" weight loss show to the White House for November sweeps, a key period that began on Thursday in which ratings are used to set local advertising rates.
Rock'n'roll's visual side on display in N.Y. museum
NEW YORK - A major new photography exhibit is built around the idea that the eyes are just as important as the ears for appreciating and understanding rock 'n' roll. The Brooklyn Museum's sprawling show "Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present" opened on Friday as a study in the contrasts that run through the rock music subculture.
Songwriters lure Bassey back for "The Performance"
LONDON - One of Britain's most beloved entertainers, with global career sales estimated at 135 million by her label, Shirley Bassey hardly needs to make albums anymore. But on November 9 in the United Kingdom, Geffen/Universal will release "The Performance," produced by James Bond soundtrack master David Arnold and featuring songs custom-written for her by Take That's Gary Barlow, the Pet Shop Boys, Rufus Wainwright, KT Tunstall and others.
U2's Rose Bowl show breaks U.S. attendance record
NASHVILLE - It took 22 years, but U2 has broken its own attendance record for the best-attended single concert performance at a U.S. venue by one headliner. The band's 360 Tour played the Pasadena, California, Rose Bowl on October 25 to a sellout crowd of 97,014 -- the highest attendance on record for one U.S. show by a single headliner based on box office totals reported to Billboard.
