Mitsubishi UFJ buys rest of UnionBanCal for 3.5 bln dlrs
AFP - Wednesday, November 5
WASHINGTON (AFP) - - Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Japan's biggest bank, has bought the remaining shares it did not own in US bank UnionBanCal Corp. for approximately 3.5 billion dollars, the companies said Tuesday.
Mitsubishi UFJ (MUFG) owned a 64.4 percent stake in UNBC when it announced on August 12 it wanted to acquire the rest of the California bank.
The Japanese mega-bank initially offered 63 dollars per share for the outstanding shares of UNBC, but several days later sweetened its bid to 73.50 dollars per share, raising the cost of the takeover to 3.5 billion dollars from 3.0 billion.
"UNBC is now a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of MUFG" and is being delisted from the New York Stock Exchange, the companies said.
The acquisition of UNBC gives MUFG a major foothold in the United States, adding the San Francisco-based bank's 337 bank branches in California, Oregon and Washington state.
UnionBanCal had 60.6 billion dollars in assets on June 30.
