ShareThis January 22, 2010 11:35 a.m. EST Topics: , United States, Politics Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor Sacramento, CA, United States (AHN) - Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman has more than doubled her lead against her rival for the GOP nomination in California's race for governor, a new poll said on Friday, a little over a week after the second-ranked Republican in the race, former U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell, dropped out to run for the Senate. According to the new Field Poll, Whitman leads state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner 45 percent to 17 percent, more than double the 13 points she had over Poizner in an October survey by the same pollster. But like the previous poll where 49 percent were undecided, a significant number of Republican voters, 38 percent, have yet to make their choice. Campbell last week dropped out of the race to run for the seat of Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA). He now leads all Republicans in that congressional race, according to another Field poll released this week. Whitman would still lose to state Attorney General Jerry Brown, the only prominent Democrat in the race, by a margin of 10 points. But her deficit is now up from 21 points, or 29 percent to 50 percent, from the October survey. The 53-year-old Poizner would also fail in a general election against Brown, the poll says. He trails the attorney general by 17 points, a slight improvement from his 25-point disadvantage versus Brown last year. Brown, 71, is a former governor and White House hopeful who has not officially announced his candidacy but is widely expected to do so. Brown was ahead of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom by 20 points in last year's Field survey when Newsom announced his withdrawal from the race, citing time he needs to spend with his family. Before that in June, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa also changed his mind and left the campaign trail. More voters view Whitman in a positively than negatively, 25 percent to 20 percent, but more than half, 55 percent, have no opinion of her. Poizner is likewise still largely unknown to voters, with 64 percent saying they have no opinion of him while 16 percent think of him favorably and 20 percent unfavorably. Twenty-four percent of voters have no opinion of Brown, but 44 percent have a positive image of him while 32 percent view him negatively. In terms of fundraising, Whitman is ahead of Poizner. She announced on Thursday that she had $30.5 million cash on hand for her primary campaign, and that she had donated another $20 million of her own money for the effort. Whitman's total personal contributions to her bid are now at $39 million. Whitman also has endorsements from top Republicans, namely, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Another 2008 White House contender, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, announced his support for her late last year, as Whitman sought to overcome scrutiny of a Sacramento Bee story about her voting history and subsequent criticisms about her response to the controversy. Poizner, on the other hand, has $17.5 million cash on hand. He has made a $15 million personal contribution to his campaign. A Silicon Valley millionaire who was born in Texas, Poizner served from 2001 to 2002 as director of critical infrastructure protection in the National Security Council under the White House fellowship program. He has endorsements from former California Gov. George Deukmejian and Edward Atsinger, CEO of Salem Communications, a top radio broadcaster and Internet company.
