Stars perform, plead for help at telethon for Haiti
NEW YORK - Dozens of the biggest names in film and music sang in somber tones and urged the world to donate to earthquake-stricken Haiti on Friday at a benefit led by actor George Clooney and Haiti-born rapper Wyclef Jean. The two-hour telethon, called "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief," was shown around the world on television, online and mobile carriers, and featured more than 100 celebrities performing from New York, Los Angeles and London.
Conan O'Brien thanks fans in "Tonight" farewell
NEW YORK - Conan O'Brien ended his brief stint as host of the "The Tonight Show" on Friday, taking shots at NBC but ultimately taking the high road and thanking his former employer for a chance at "the best job in the world." "This company has been my home for most of my adult life," O'Brien told the Burbank, California, audience and home viewers during his final moments on the show, which began with a sustained standing ovation from the fans who chanted "Conan, Conan."
Nick Jonas steps out solo to show "Who I Am"
LOS ANGELES , which hits shelves February 2, isn't a teenybopper project, but rather one that combines Jonas' youthful appeal and the experience of rock-solid industry veterans. The Administration comprises John Fields -- the Jonas Brothers' longtime producer -- on bass and former New Power Generation members Sonny Thompson, Michael Bland and Tommy Barbarella.
Actress Jean Simmons dies in California
WASHINGTON - British actress Jean Simmons, who starred opposite Laurence Olivier in "Hamlet" during a career spanning 60 years, has died in California, Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday. Simmons, who was 80 and had lung cancer, died at her home in Santa Monica on Friday night, it quoted her agent Judy Page as saying.
Jackson estate opposes allowance for father Joe
LOS ANGELES - Attorneys for Michael Jackson's estate said they should not have to pay the late pop star's father, Joe, a reported $15,000 monthly allowance. In papers filed on Thursday, attorneys for the estate argued Joe Jackson was never dependent on his son when alive, and that the estate should not have to pay his expenses now because he was excluded from the "Thriller" singer's will.
NBC facing long road back after Conan O'Brien drama
LOS ANGELES - NBC may have put a public relations nightmare behind it with the departure of "Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien, but the network faces a long, costly road to revive its sagging fortunes, media analysts said. NBC's $45 million exit deal for O'Brien was seen as a drop in the bucket against NBC Universal's estimated $3 billion cash flow, and a cheaper solution than paying off Jay Leno after the failure of his new prime-time talk show.
Harrison Ford can't cure "Extraordinary Measures"
LOS ANGELES - Since "Extraordinary Measures," a tremulous medical drama about a father trying to save the lives of his children, is the first feature released by the newly constituted CBS Films, it's all too tempting to describe the piece as a TV movie, reminiscent of those disease-of-the-week affairs that used to clog the tube. That might be a cheap shot, but unfortunately, it's pretty close to the mark. The movie works on an unsubtle level; you'd have to be stonehearted not to respond to this tale of adorable tots in jeopardy. But it never rises above formula fare. The film has modest box office appeal but will have to overcome mixed reviews.
Return to U.S. album summit eyed for Susan Boyle
LOS ANGELES - Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" might make a return engagement at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 that will be released Wednesday. Industry prognosticators suggest her set could sell around 80,000 copies by the sales week's end on Sunday. The set is reaping the benefits of Boyle's chat and performance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on January 19. Boyle's segment lasted for the first 20 minutes of the show, and the rest of the hour-long broadcast belonged to fellow reality TV contestant Adam Lambert. His "For Your Entertainment" debut album also is expected see a big gain on the next pop album chart.
Angels & Airwaves plans free digital album release
LOS ANGELES - Blink-182 guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge is taking a break from major-label life with the release of the forthcoming album by his other band, Angels & Airwaves. The group's third studio album, "Love," will arrive February 14 as a free digital download. DeLonge and Angels & Airwaves manager Rick DeVoe agree that self-releasing the 10-song set is a financial risk, especially with DeLonge spending up to $500,000 of his own money to fund the process. But the artist hopes to recoup through corporate sponsorships, touring, merchandise sales, premium exclusive tracks and videos on the band's Web site and by selling a deluxe version of "Love" with 30 minutes of exclusive bonus material.
Judge says Polanski must return to U.S. for sentencing
LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles judge on Friday said fugitive film director Roman Polanski must return to the United States to be sentenced for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. Judge Peter Espinoza rejected a request by Polanski to be sentenced in his absence, and instead said the Oscar-winning director must return to California.
