"Date Night" takes early lead at box office
LOS ANGELES - "Date Night," a romantic comedy starring sitcom staples Steve Carell and Tina Fey, narrowly claimed an early lead at the weekend box office in North America, according to preliminary sales data issued on Saturday. The 20th Century Fox film earned $9.3 million during its first day of release across the United States and Canada on Friday, just ahead of last weekend's champion "Clash of the Titans" with $8.4 million, said tracking firm Box Office Mojo.
Being a "Tudors" king changed Jonathan Rhys Meyers
LOS ANGELES - He might have been just another young Hollywood actor on the rise, but Jonathan Rhys Meyers chose to become a king -- on TV. And doing so, the actor said, changed his life. Four years ago, Rhys Meyers was coming off an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe win for playing Elvis Presley, and he had wowed audiences in Woody Allen's "Match Point" and worked opposite Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible III."
Photo agencies seeing red over Cannes festival deal
PARIS - Photo agencies are crying foul over the Cannes film festival's exclusive deal with French broadcasters that may cause restrictions on some video coverage of the 63rd annual Riviera rendezvous. Festival organizers have verbally informed several of the international news agencies that regularly cover the fest that severe restrictions on access to red carpets and news conferences might prevent them from providing their usual coverage.
Charlie Sheen says if TV show ends, "so be it"
LOS ANGELES - Award-winning actor Charlie Sheen has broken his silence on contract renewal talks for his hit TV program, "Two and A Half Men," saying that if his role ends after the program's current season, "so be it." Sheen, who was nominated four times for an Emmy for his role as sex-crazed bachelor Charlie Harper on the CBS show, gave a statement to People magazine on Friday in which he slammed media reports that he was demanding a higher salary.
"Hannah Montana" creators sue Disney for profits
LOS ANGELES - Two of the creators of Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana" franchise have sued the network for more than $5 million in profits from the show. In a lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, series co-creators Barry O'Brien and Richard Correll say they've been denied their fair share of the hugely successful Miley Cyrus series.
Blur to release first new single for seven years
LONDON - British band Blur will release its first single for seven years later this month, although only 1,000 copies of the limited edition vinyl record will go on sale, NME music magazine reported on Friday. The two songs, recorded two weeks ago, follow the band's reunion shows last summer and are part of an initiative to support Record Store Day on April 17.
Aguilera's "Tonight" connects with radio listeners
LOS ANGELES , the singer's hit-making instincts are intact.
"The Addams Family" musical disappoints on Broadway
NEW YORK - A big-budget Broadway musical adaptation of the classic celebration of eccentricity and morbidity, "The Addams Family," was panned by critics on Friday as bland and boring. The production, which opened on Thursday, stars Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. It derives from Charles Addams' New Yorker cartoons that also inspired the 1960s television series and two 1990s movies.
"Twilight" actress Greene mixing in some "Butter"
LOS ANGELES will direct.
Major labels eager to enter iPad app marketplace
DENVER - When avid technophile Mike Shinoda was approached backstage last year with an idea for developing a Linkin Park iPhone game, the band's co-frontman knew he wanted it to be more than just another run-of-the-mill artist app. "It was important to us to do something creative and fun," he says. "We didn't want to throw a bunch of songs at the game, slap our name on it and cash the checks."
