ADVERTISEMENT John Yettaw flew out of military-ruled Myanmar on Sunday with Democrat US Senator Jim Webb, who secured the eccentric former military veteran's release by the junta from a sentence of seven years' hard labour. Webb said that Yettaw -- who is 54 and suffers from epilepsy and diabetes -- was "not a well man" and had suffered what he called a medical episode even as he was being deported by Myanmar authorities. "Our primary concern is to ensure the health of Mr Yettaw," said Cynthia Brown, the spokeswoman for the US embassy in Bangkok, citing privacy reasons for not giving further details. Diplomatic sources said Yettaw needed to be well enough to fly back home to Falcon, Missouri. He could fly back as early as late Monday on a commercial flight but there was no confirmation yet, the sources said. Webb told reporters on Monday, despite his comments the previous day, that Yettaw's health was a private matter and that he could not discuss it. Yettaw said he intruded on Suu Kyi's house in May on a "mission from God" to warn her about a vision that she would be assassinated, swimming across a lake to her mansion using a pair of homemade flippers. But the Mormon father-of-seven's actions instead landed Suu Kyi with another 18 months' house arrest in a sentence that was condemned around the world. Suu Kyi, 64, and Yettaw were both convicted by a court in the junta-run nation on Tuesday. Yettaw was hospitalised earlier this month after suffering a series of epileptic fits while being held in Yangon's notorious Insein Prison, causing delays to the trial. A tired-looking Yettaw flashed the sign-language gesture for "I love you" as a US embassy van drove him from a military airport in Bangkok to hospital on Sunday. Webb negotiated Yettaw's release during talks with Myanmar junta leader Than Shwe on Saturday, the first meeting between the reclusive military supremo and a high-level US official. The senator, who has close links to US President Barack Obama, also succeeded where even UN chief Ban Ki-moon had failed during a visit earlier this month, by managing to meet Suu Kyi herself. Webb denied after the talks that he had offered Myanmar's rulers anything in exchange for Yettaw's freedom and said he was "hopeful" they would heed calls to free Suu Kyi to allow her to participate in elections due in 2010. Speaking in Bangkok on Monday after talks with Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, he said he agreed with the stance of Myanmar's neighbours that US sanctions were not helping to effect change in the country. "My view is that we don't have any more sanctions to put on Myanmar and we need a new approach," Webb told reporters when asked if he agreed with the European Union's decision last week to tighten measures against the junta. He said sanctions had also increased China's influence over the regime. China has habitually held off criticising Myanmar's rights record and detention of dissidents, saying that these were internal matters for its close ally. The US senator's visit was seen as heralding a possible softening of Washington's stance towards Myanmar, in line with previous statements by the Obama administration about reviewing US policy. Webb said he would discuss his visit with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
