ADVERTISEMENT "I hate using euphemisms at times like this but we fear the worst," said Stephen Smith. "We have very grave concerns for three Australians: Garth McEvoy, Craig Senger and Nathan Verity," he told public broadcaster ABC. "There are a range of official and also family reasons why I can't go any further in that respect," he added, speaking ahead of his departure for the Indonesian capital. Two suspected suicide bombers set off the blasts which tore through the Ritz-Carlton and nearby JW Marriott hotels, killing at least nine and injuring more than 40 people as radical Islamism apparently resurfaced on the archipelago after a largely-peaceful four years. Verity's father, Peter, told The Australian newspaper his son, 38, had been killed at the JW Marriott, where he had been attending a business breakfast with 36-year-old Senger and others. "It was some of his friends in Jakarta who went around the hospitals and found him," Verity said. "He's got a little boy. He's dead." Senger, mining commissioner for the Australian government's trade agency Austrade, was also feared to have been killed, his family told the Sydney Morning Herald. "The first thing he would have done if he was OK and had been taken to hospital was make sure someone rang (his wife) Kate straight away and rang the embassy, he had plenty of ID on him," Senger's uncle, Geoff Lazarus, said. "We take it to mean he has been killed," he added. "We are deeply distressed." The foreign affairs department said it could not confirm the reports, and would only reiterate comments made by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd late Friday that there were "grave concerns" for three Australian citizens. A spokeswoman told AFP at least one Australian had also been hurt -- named in media reports as ANZ Banking Group employee Scott Merrillees, 47 -- who she said had received medical treatment and consular assistance. Smith said Australian police stood ready to assist with investigations, and added that there had been no apparent warning of the attacks in the intelligence community. "The advice I have from officials is that there was no intelligence that would draw attention to these attacks, but obviously as well that is now being exhaustively assessed," he said. Almost 100 Australians have died in militant attacks against western targets in Indonesia in recent years, including bombings on the resort island of Bali in 2002 and 2005. Canberra has since 2005 warned tourists against travel to the country, its nearest neighbour and the world's most populous Muslim nation, on the grounds there is an ongoing and credible extremist threat. Local defence and strategic policy think-tank ASPI warned less than 24 hours before Friday's twin bomb blasts that radical elements of the group Jemaah Islamiyah, behind the 2002 Bali blasts that killed 202 people, were set to strike again. "The hardline group is fully supported by a group of young, dedicated individuals who share a deep commitment to the cause, advocating al-Qaeda-style attacks that directly target Westerners," ASPI warned in a briefing Thursday.
