ADVERTISEMENT China has been getting ominously closer to walking away with all the gold medals on offer since the country first started developing into a force in the sport in the 1980s. At the last three Olympics they have been inching ever closer to their target, winning five out of eight gold medals in Sydney in 2000, one more in Athens four years later and an incredible seven on home territory last year. Added to that, in the 2007 Worlds they won a phenomenal nine out of 10 gold medals, but in both the last two years, the men's 10m platform has been their Achilles heel. And it is an event that is sure to demand much attention once again as the man who could deny China its sweep is one of the few openly gay athletes competing at the highest level, Australia's Matthew Mitcham. Mitcham's victory at the Beijing Games was remarkable for the unlikely comeback he produced on his last dive. He actually snatched gold by producing the highest ever single dive score of 112.10 on his final effort while China's Zhou Luxin produced his worst effort of the Games with a 74.80. Such a dramatic late swing is unlikely to happen twice. But that completed an unfortunate double for Zhou as he was also the Chinese athlete to miss out on gold at the 2007 Worlds in Melbourne when both he and team-mate Lin Yue made mistakes to allow Russia's Gleb Galperin to snatch victory. Zhou will be back in Rome to try to make amends as China sticks with its so-called 'Dream Team' of 10 athletes who won nine gold and one silver medal between them in Beijing. Another star attraction in the men's 10m dive could be 15-year-old Briton Tom Daley, who became the youngest diver to compete at the Olympics last year when he finished seventh. The 2008 European champion won the FINA Grand Prix at Fort Lauderdale earlier this year and should be among the favourites. China's star attraction will be four-time Olympic champion Guo Jingjing, the undisputed queen of the boards who will compete in her sixth, and possibly last, worlds. She has won the 3m springboard and syncronised springboard double at the last four championships and will once again team with Wu Minxia as she looks to continue rewriting the record books. "I love my career," said the 27-year-old glamour girl -- the most decorated female Olympic diver -- on why she was still in the sport. "I've been diving for more than 20 years now, and I think that I've developed feelings and great interest for the sport, because each time I get on the spring board I just feel very, very happy."
