Mentally Ill Man Kills Parents, Wounds Police During Standoff

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - A 34-year-old Montclair, Calif. man shot and killed his elderly parents during a standoff with police on Friday that started with the wounding of two officers.
Adrian Bonadie surrendered to police outside his family's home following the more than four-hour standoff. Inside the home, police found the bodies of his parents. Family and friends told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin that Bonadie became mentally unstable following a prison term. He had been arrested in the past on drug, residential burglary and assault charges.
The standoff began at 9:45 a.m. Friday morning when two police officers arrived at the house in response to a call from concerned family members who were unable to reach the Bonadies by phone. Bonadie's parents told these family members that their son had been acting strangely that morning.
The two officers never made it to the door. They say Bonadie shot at them and they returned fire. One of the officers was wounded by shrapnel and another suffered a hand wound.
Toward the end of the standoff, Bonadie stood outside the house holding what police describe as a submachine gun in each hand. He stood on the lawn for 20 to 30 minutes while SWAT negotiators tried to convince him to surrender. He eventually put his weapons down and surrendered.
Police say Bonadie was "incoherent and to some extent paranoid" during the negotiations. He told police he thought people were trying to poison him.
Inside the house, police found his parents' bodies and a cache of weapons and ammunition. A local school was put on lockdown during the situation.
Bonadie was taken to a local hospital for observation before being booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder on a police officer.
