President Nicolas Sarkozy's son Jean was elected to the planning board for France's top business district a day after he renounced his bid for the chairmans position amid a bitter nepotism row.
PARIS (AFP) - – President Nicolas Sarkozy's son Jean was on Friday elected to the planning board for France's top business district a day after he renounced his bid for the chairmans position amid a bitter nepotism row.
He was elected by 30 right-wing votes among the 45-member Hauts-de-Seine regional council to sit on the board of the planning agency known as EPAD that manages La Defense skyscraper park west of Paris.
The 23-year-old on Thursday went on prime-time television to say he was dropping his bid for the chairman's position because he did not want a victory "tainted" by suspicions of favouritism.
The fledgling politician denounced what he called a "campaign of manipulation and disinformation" against him but admitted -- without elaborating -- there was an "element of truth" in the storm of criticism.
Critics had slammed the bid as proof France was becoming a "banana republic" run at the whim of the right-wing president who is half-way through his five-year mandate.
The row came as EPAD was due to oversee the expansion of the business district, which will include the construction of the ultramodern Signal Tower designed by architect Jean Nouvel.
The government wants to extend EPAD's remit to take in half of neighbouring communist-ruled Nanterre.
