US-TECH Summary
Reuters - Tuesday, July 21
Yahoo set to unveil new homepage
ADVERTISEMENT
SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> said it plans to introduce a major overhaul of its Internet home page on Tuesday, as the company strives to make itself more relevant to Web surfers and create new ways to sell advertising. The new homepage blends Yahoo's collection of online content and products with popular social networking services like Facebook and Twitter, representing what a Yahoo official called the most "radical" make-over of the site since its inception more than a decade ago.
Warner Music and YouTube still talking on deal
NEW YORK - Warner Music Group <WMG.N>, the world's third largest music company, is still in talks with video sharing site YouTube to license its artists' music videos even after all its major rivals have renewed their deals. EMI Music <LNDONE.UL>, the smallest of the big four music labels, quietly renewed its deal with YouTube in February after Sony Music Entertainment <6758.T> <SNE.N> and ahead of Vivendi's <VIV.PA> Universal Music Group. Universal Music renewed its deal with YouTube and announced a wider plan to partner with YouTube to create a stand-alone music video website called Vevo. The site is expected to be launched later this year.
India becomes R&D hot spot as high-tech firms cut costs
BANGALORE - At Microsoft's research center in a leafy lane in India's tech capital, a new generation of researchers are being groomed half a world away from the software giant's sprawling headquarters in Seattle. Complete with beanbags and coffee served in steel tumblers, the center is helping change the perception that India is no place for top-end research and development.
Google cleared in UK defamation suit
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> is not responsible for allegedly defamatory online comments that appeared in its Internet search results, a British judge ruled in a decision made known on Monday. Google's automated search engine trawls the Web and indexes content without any human input, said Justice David Eady. As such, he said, Google can not be considered a publisher under English law.
Barnes & Noble unveils store for digital books
SAN FRANCISCO - Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> unveiled on Monday what it called the world's largest online bookstore, taking on Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> with over 700,00 titles readable on devices such as Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone. The top U.S. bookseller plans to charge customers $9.99 to download most new releases and bestsellers -- the same as Amazon. The titles now available include more than half a million public domain books from Google Inc <GOOG.O>.
EU sets hearing over Google books deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is to hold a hearing on September 7 for interested parties to comment on Google's <GOOG.O> deal with publishers to make millions of books available online and its impact on EU writers' rights. "Participants were invited to it three weeks ago," Commission spokesman Oliver Drewes said on Monday of the September 7 hearing.
Sony inks DVD distribution deal with Redbox
LOS ANGELES - Sony Corp's <6758.T> U.S. pictures and home entertainment arm has struck a multi-year deal to make available its titles to Redbox's rental kiosks across the United States, riding the fledgling company's expanding network. The deal with Redbox, which rents DVDs from more than 17,000 bright-red kiosks for as low as $1 per night at locations from McDonald's outlets to Wal-Mart, will boost the presence of Sony titles in the market, both firms said on Monday.
EMC takes control of Data Domain
BOSTON - EMC Corp <EMC.N>, the biggest maker of corporate data storage gear, said it has acquired a majority stake in Data Domain Inc <DDUP.O> and expects to complete the acquisition of the company by month's end. It said Data Domain will become the foundation of a new product division within EMC's storage business, focused on the development and delivery of next-generation disk-based backup, recovery and archive solutions.
IT spending forecasts improve, Cisco popular: UBS
LONDON - U.S. and European IT budgets are expected to fall 2 percent over the next year, less than the 5 percent decline expected three months ago, according to a survey of 100 chief information officers carried out by UBS. U.S. CIOs were less pessimistic, expecting a 1.3 percent decline in budgets, while their European counterparts predicted a 3.4 percent fall, according to the Swiss bank's quarterly survey published on Monday.
Microsoft deal talk, optimism overshadow results
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> will likely report the first annual sales dip in its history as a public company, but investors are looking beyond that for upbeat comments on Windows 7, signs of a tech sector recovery, and even a deal with Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> to challenge Google Inc <GOOG.O>. The question for investors when the world's largest software company reports quarterly results on Thursday is whether it can present enough optimism to maintain the momentum that has pushed shares up 63 percent since early March.
