New Zealand defeat Sevens pacesetters England
GEORGE, South Africa (AFP) - – New Zealand laid down a marker in the second leg of the 2011 IRB Sevens World Series at Outeniqua Park when they defeated tournament pacesetters England 20-7 Friday.
The defeat consigned England, who won the opening round of the series in Dubai last week, to a Saturday quarter-final clash with hosts South Africa.
New Zealand, beaten semi-finalists in Dubai, took control from the start of a clash between the two unbeaten Pool C sides, scoring tries through Declan ODonnell and Frank Halai to lead 10-0 at half-time.
Dan Norton scored a converted try for England but the All Blacks pulled away with further tries by DJ Forbes and Jackson Ormond.
Wales won all three Pool A matches to earn the dubious reward of playing Samoa, winners of the 2010 series and runners-up in Dubai.
The Welshmen got their campaign off to an ideal start when they beat pool favourites Australia 33-15 in the opening match in the western Cape town, only their third Sevens win over the Australians in 23 attempts.
Wales scored two converted tries in the first four minutes before Australia pulled back to 14-10 at half-time, but the winners ran in three unanswered tries immediately after the break to seal victory.
The Welsh went on to beat Scotland 19-7 and France 29-12 with Aaron Shingler scoring four tries in the latter game.
Samoa seemed set to win Pool B until they conceded two late tries to draw 14-14 against South Pacific rivals Fiji, who topped the group on points difference.
Samoa had a fright in their opening match before defeating the United States 24-22 with the Americans scoring two early tries and leading 10-5 at half-time.
The Pacific islanders turned on the power after the break to lead 24-15 but had an anxious finish after Apelu Faauiga was sin-binned late in the match.
Both teams scored four tries and the United States were left to rue missing three conversions.
Fiji swept through their first two matches, beating Namibia 47-7 and the United States 43-5, with Seremaia Buroto scoring a hat-trick of tries in both matches.
Buroto crossed the line for the seventh time in the tournament to secure the draw against Samoa. Fiji scored their first try with seconds remaining in the match and scored again after snatching possession from the kick-off.
South Africa swept through Pool D, beating Portugal 38-0, Zimbabwe 33-7 and Argentina 29-5. Runners-up Argentina will meet New Zealand for a place in the semi-finals.
