Tween star Justin Bieber urges fans to calm down
SYDNEY - Tween pop idol Justin Bieber appealed to his fans on Wednesday to calm down after his hat was stolen and his mother knocked over by a crowd of about 500 waiting to greet him as he arrived in New Zealand. The frenzy came after Australian police on Monday canceled a live performance in Sydney by the 16-year-old Canadian singer when a crowd of about 5,000 teenage girls got out of hand, with about eight youngsters injured in the crush and others fainting.
Jake Pavelka stumbles off "Dancing With the Stars"
LOS ANGELES - Reality television star Jake Pavelka exited the ballroom floor on "Dancing With the Stars" Tuesday night after stumbling during his Samba the previous night. Pavelka choked back tears when he addressed the crowd after being told he would not return, saying he was "honored" to appear on the widely-watched U.S. TV dance contest.
"Train Your Dragon" sequel in the works
LOS ANGELES - After a shaky start, "How to Train Your Dragon" has earned enough box-office coin to ensure that it becomes a multimedia franchise, with the next movie headed for screens in the second half of 2013, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said Tuesday. A live arena show, something akin to "Walking With Dinosaurs," also is in the works.
"Idol" Adam Lambert announces first solo tour
LOS ANGELES - "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert will embark on his first solo tour in June, playing 19 U.S. dates and bringing fellow "Idol" rocker Allison Iraheta along for part of the ride. Lambert, 28, considered one of the most exciting contestants not to win the top-rated TV singing contest, will kick off his "Glam Nation" tour on June 4 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, his record company said on Tuesday.
Guggenheim to write "Da Vinci" action feature
LOS ANGELES - Marc Guggenheim, a showrunner on ABC's "FlashForward" and a writer on the film "Green Lantern," has been tapped to pen "Leonardo Da Vinci and the Soldiers of Forever," the Warner Bros. project that recasts the original Renaissance man as an action hero. Warner is doubling down on Guggenhem, also hiring him to work on a draft of "Thieves of Baghdad," its "Ocean's 11"-meets-"Arabian Nights" project.
Bret Michaels doctors hopeful of full recovery
LOS ANGELES - Doctors treating rocker Bret Michaels for a brain hemorrhage are hopeful he will make a full recovery, but regaining his health will be painful and could take weeks or months, the singer's publicist said on Tuesday. Doctors said the Poison front man and "Celebrity Apprentice" TV contestant was lucky to have escaped death from the brain hemorrhage last week, and he is now in "positive spirits."
Melissa Etheridge in "Fearless" mode after split
LOS ANGELES - Melissa Etheridge can barely stop herself from uttering a swear word as she surveys her unfamiliar surroundings. The 48-year-old rock singer is sitting in a trailer backstage at "Dancing with the Stars," a talent show watched by virtually everyone in America, except for her.
Shakira heads to Arizona to back immigrant rights
LOS ANGELES - Colombian-born pop star Shakira will meet with the mayor of Phoenix this week to help campaign against a new Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigration, a member of the mayor's staff said on Tuesday. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter will speak with Mayor Phil Gordon, a strong critic of the new law, and other city officials on Thursday afternoon, a spokesman for the mayor said.
Australian cleaners don't give a rat's for Banksy
CANBERRA - An Australian council is ruing a decision to send street cleaners into a Melbourne lane after they painted over a priceless stencil of a rat by the celebrated British graffiti artist Banksy. Melbourne Deputy Lord Mayor Susan Riley last week sent a clean-up team into Hosier Lane, reknowed internationally for its colorful street art, to clean up garbage in the graffiti-lined passage after local residents complained.
Kevin James comedy "Zookeeper" moved to summer 2011
LOS ANGELES - Sony Pictures took a good look at its recently acquired Kevin James comedy, "The Zookeeper," and saw summer sizzler written all over it. As a result, the movie, which combines live action and animation, is moving from a scheduled October 8 release date to July 8, 2011.
