SOFIA (AFP) - – A Bulgarian comedy that sends up the country's diplomatic elite as corrupt has become a surprise box office hit, drawing bigger local audiences than Hollywood epic "Avatar", figures showed Tuesday.
"Mission London" is a satire about an attempt by a Bulgarian president's wife to get the British queen to attend a party at Sofia's embassy in London.
The movie has attracted 142,833 viewers in the 10 days since its release on April 16, according to its distributors.
By comparison, when James Cameron's "Avatar" was released in Bulgaria in December, it was seen by 130,770 people in its first 10 days on screen.
In terms of box office takings, however, the comedy has not quite been able to match "Avatar", because ticket prices were higher for the 3D blockbuster.
Based on a novel by Bulgarian writer Alek Popov, "Mission London", pokes fun at Bulgaria's diplomatic elite who are depicted as neck-deep in theft, corruption, racketeering and prostitution. And so the simple task of organising a party turns into a hilarious farce.
The movie will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month.
