ShareThis April 27, 2010 5:39 p.m. EST Topics: United States, economy, business and finance, company information Mitchell Jaworski - AHN News Reporter St. Louis, MO, United States (AHN) - Panera Bread Co. announced Tuesday that first quarter earnings jumped nearly 50 percent as revenue and same-store sales grew by double-digits. The bread and sandwich chain said first quarter earnings totaled $25.8 million or 82 cents a share, up from $17.4 million or 57 cents a share in the same period a year earlier. The result was in-line with analyst estimates. Earnings were helped by a 14 percent rise in revenue to $364.2 million, while same-store sales at company owned locations jumped 10 percent in the period. Panera reported that the first quarter same-store sales strength has continued into April, with sales up 10.3 percent coming into the final days of the month. The company also reported an increase in operating margin, up 2.6 percent in the quarter. The rise marks the eighth consecutive quarter of improvement. Looking ahead, the company expects second quarter earnings of 81 to 83 cents a share with company owned same-store sales rising by 8.5 to 9.5 percent. The guidance did fall short of expectations with analysts looking for earnings of 85 cents a share in the second quarter. Panera had a total of 1,388 locations in operation at the end of the first quarter, 585 of those are company owned while the remaining are franchised.
