China, Turkey turn new page in Sino-Turkish relations
Slideshow: Full Photo Coverage: Business & Economy
ANKARA (AFP) - – Turkey and China on Friday opened a new chapter in Sino-Turkish relations with a raft of agreements highlighting Beijing's desire to lure a rising economy relatively unscathed by the global recession.
In a last stop on Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's stormy European tour, the two nations pledged to raise their trade to 50 billion dollars by 2015 from an expected 17 billion dollars this year.
"We set ourselves a timetable. We agreed to increase our trade volume to 50 billions dollars in 2015 and... to 100 billion dollars (71 billion euros) in 2020," Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a joint press conference with Wen.
He said the two sides had also agreed to carry out their trade in their national currencies, while Wen underlined the two country's commitment to raising their ties to the level of a "strategic partnership."
"This will be an important milestone in our relations," he said through a translator.
The two leaders were speaking after ministers from both sides signed eight agreements on deepening economic ties, collaborating in infrastructure projects in third countries, increasing cooperation in transport and furthering cultural exchanges.
The trade volume between Turkey and China stood at 14.2 billion dollars (10.2 billion euros) in 2009 -- 12.6 billion dollars of which consisted of Chinese exports.
Wen, the first Chinese premier to visit Turkey in eight years, said his country was not opposed to looking into ways to redress the imbalance.
"The Chinese side will carry out a study in order to sustain our trade without giving a huge deficit," he added.
Wen invited Erdogan to China for talks aimed at further increasing mutual trust.
One of the agreements would open the way for the joint construction of 4,500 kilometers (2,700 miles) of railway in Turkey, Erdogan said, adding that efforts would now focus on finding the necessary finance for the project.
Chinese companies are already involved in the construction of railroads for two high-speed train links, he added.
The Turkish leader described bilateral cooperation on international issues as "exemplary" while Wen said China "recognised" Turkey's growing regional and global strength.
The two leaders stayed clear of the situation of the Muslim Turkic-speaking Uighurs in China's Xinjiang region, one of the few areas of tension in bilateral ties.
Turkey accepts China's sovereignty over Xinjiang, but last year, Ankara heavily criticised the deadly violence in the region -- which Erdogan described as "atrocities."
Wen was the target of a protest by some 100 Uighur expatriates who gathered outside his hotel Friday to protest China's policies in Xinjiang, an AFP photographer said.
Police prevented the protestors from approaching the hotel and a shoe hurled by a demonstrator towards Wen's car missed the target.
The Chinese premier -- who said late Thursday that he wanted to "turn over a new leaf" in ties with Turkey -- will travel to Istanbul later on Friday for talks with Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
He will meet businessmen and tour the city's historical sites on Saturday before returning home.
Analysts say Wen's stop in Turkey underlined Beijing's interest in an economy that has made a swift exit from the global recession with growth rates of 11.7 percent and 10.3 percent in the first two quarters of the year -- a pace that is on par with China and above the G-20 group of leading economies.
Turkey is the last stop on Wen's European tour -- overshadowed by a currency debate -- which has already taken him to Greece, Belgium and Brussels.
