Warner Bros scraps 3-D plans for next "Harry Potter"
NEW YORK - Harry Potter fans will have to wait a bit longer to enjoy the magic of 3-D. Warner Bros Pictures said on Friday that it was unable to produce a 3-D version of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I" in time for its release next month, meaning the film will be presented only in conventional 2-D and in Imax theaters.
Yoko Ono says still getting over Lennon's death
REYKJAVIK - Artist and musician Yoko Ono said on Friday she was still getting over the death of her husband John Lennon, who was gunned down in New York nearly 30 years ago. Speaking ahead of what would have been the ex-Beatle's 70th birthday on Saturday, Ono, 77, was in Iceland for the re-lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower that she created in memory of one of the world's must influential songwriters.
Johnny Depp makes surprise school visit in pirate gear
LONDON - Hollywood star Johnny Depp took "show and tell" to a new level at a London school when he turned up in full pirate regalia after a fan wrote to him seeking help stage a "mutiny," according to media reports. Beatrice Delap, 9, wrote to Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp's character in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, asking for help with an uprising against teachers at Meridian Primary School in Greenwich, south-east London.
Eminem says foul language has no place at home
NEW YORK, October8 - He is well-known for using foul language in lyrics, but rapper Eminem says bad words have no place in his own home with children around, he told television news magazine "60 Minutes." Early in his career, the Grammy-winning artist was often the object of complaints about violent, explicit, misogynistic and homophobic lyrics in songs from his albums such as "The Slim Shady LP" and "The Marshal Mathers LP."
Michelle Williams to play Marilyn Monroe in movie
LOS ANGELES - Michelle Williams will play Marilyn Monroe in a new movie based around the iconic actress's 1956 film shoot in London opposite Sir Laurence Olivier, producers said on Friday. Williams, 30, who earned an Oscar nomination for her 2005 role in "Brokeback Mountain" and also appeared in "Shutter Island", stars as Monroe alongside a British cast that sees Kenneth Branagh as Olivier, Julia Ormond playing actress Vivien Leigh and Judi Dench in the role of British screen veteran Dame Sybil Thorndike.
Billy Idol promises drugs, booze and women in his memoir
LOS ANGELES - British punk rocker Billy Idol is writing his memoir and promises not to hold back on the details about drugs, booze and women. Idol said he personally would be writing his memoir "Dancing with Myself," named after his 1980s hit single, which will be published by Simon & Schuster division Touchstone in late 2011 or early 2012.
Zuckerberg takes staff to see "Social Network"
LOS ANGELES - Mark Zuckerberg ended up seeing "The Social Network" after all. The Facebook cofounder and CEO took his staff to a screening, a company spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Tina Fey joins "Women of SNL" special
LOS ANGELES - Tina Fey will return to "Saturday Night Live" in a primetime special, a representative for the NBC sketch comedy series confirmed. Fey, Rachel Dratch and Amy Poehler will be among the former cast members who appear in "The Women of SNL," which will air Monday, November 1 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET.
Apple in talks on fee-based music service: report
- Apple is in talks with major record labels to provide a subscription-based music service, allowing unlimited access to songs for a monthly fee, the New York Post said, citing unnamed sources. A few weeks ago, Apple iTunes boss Eddy Cue discussed with music labels how they could implement this plan, the Post said.
"Life" a favorite to top weekend box office
LOS ANGELES - Disney's wannabe thoroughbred of a sports drama is limping to the starting gate. One of three wide releases set to hit domestic multiplexes Friday, "Secretariat" totes relatively modest production costs and the grossly immodest marketing costs typical of any major studio release. But the weekend's other wide-release debuts look a bit hotter to trot.
