Action guinea pigs topple Potter at box office
ADVERTISEMENT
LOS ANGELES - A trio of animated secret agent guinea pigs broke the spell of the new Harry Potter movie to take the top spot at the North American box office, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday. "G-Force," a Disney live action and computer-generated animation family feature, earned $32.1 million in the United States and Canada, pushing "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" down to second place with $30 million in its second weekend.
Fans get first look at star-studded "Iron Man 2"
SAN DIEGO - Filming for "Iron Man 2" finished just last week but thousands of fans got their first sneak peek at the star-studded new cast members this weekend at the Comic-Con convention. Ten months before "Iron Man 2" hits movie theaters in May 2010, fans saw Robert Downey Jr.'s industrialist-turned-playboy superhero Tony Stark working alone and considering another request to join forces with Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson.
"Lost" bringing back characters from 1st season
SAN DIEGO will be back on ABC's "Lost" next year, along with several other characters who haven't been seen since the first season, producers said over the weekend during a panel presentation at the Comic-Con convention. The revelation confirms reports that suggested a "Lost" reunion of sorts for the final season. In May's finale, the castaways detonated a bomb on the mysterious island in hopes of resetting the last several years of their lives.
James Cameron talks tech, "Avatar" at Comic-Con
SAN DIEGO - Even before Oscar-winning writer/director James Cameron unveiled 25 minutes of 3D footage for his upcoming space adventure "Avatar" at Comic-Con last Thursday, 20th Century Fox had blanketed downtown with "Avatar" posters unveiling the alien race, Na'Vi, from planet Pandora. And Once the adoring crowd at Comic-Con got their first glimpse of the actual film footage, the focus turned from cutting-edge 3D to performance-captured, computer-generated magic. Cameron talks about his love of technology and his 14-year quest to bring his world of Pandora to the big screen.
Tim Burton explores "Alice in Wonderland"
SAN DIEGO - Tim Burton's 3D promotional trailer for Walt Disney Pictures' "Alice in Wonderland" has been the talk of Comic-Con, thanks in part to the surprise cameo appearance of Johnny Depp at a panel on Thursday. Depp plays The Mad Hatter in the new film, which debuts in theaters in March 2010. Burton made his first appearance at the giant comic book and pop culture convention here since the 1970s, when Comic-Con involved slides of the "Superman" movie.
New film shows pranksters battling companies
NEW YORK - Jacques Servin fooled the BBC and the world when he posed as a Dow Chemical spokesman five years ago and said that Dow would pay billions of dollars in compensation for India's Bhopal disaster. Such hoaxes by Servin and his partner, Igor Vamos, better known as the American protest group "The Yes Men," are featured in a documentary premiering on U.S. cable channel HBO on Monday.
Batman film in 2011? It's a mystery made for Holmes
SAN DIEGO - Holy start date, Batman fans! Actor Gary Oldman, who starred in the recent blockbuster Batman movies let it slip on Friday that a new flick about the crime-fighting superhero is set to start filming next year -- but you didn't hear it from him. Oldman, who played Commissioner Gordon in director Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" was promoting another movie, thriller "The Book of Eli," at the giant Comic-Con convention in San Diego when he was asked about plans for a third movie in Nolan's hit series.
At 40, Comic-Con grows into family affair
SAN DIEGO - If life truly begins at 40, as the old saying goes, then after four decades the giant Comic-Con pop culture showcase is seeing a rebirth of sorts among a new generation of attendees -- families and children. Even as Hollywood travels here to hype their newest comic book movies such as "Iron Man 2," aimed mostly at teen boys and young men, this year's 40th anniversary of Comic-Con has seen older couples dressed as "Star Wars" characters looking for fun with their little stormtrooper children by their side.
Kutcher says Mischa Barton is "doing great"
LOS ANGELES - Actor Ashton Kutcher said on Friday that Mischa Barton, "The O.C." star who was hospitalized last week for psychiatric observation, is "doing great" and headed for New York to join the cast of a TV show. Kutcher talked briefly about Barton at a technology conference in Pasadena, which the actor and producer attended to discuss his use of the social networking website Twitter.
Gay black writer E. Lynn Harris dead

Laura Gilmore said Harris collapsed at a Los Angeles hotel on Thursday and could not be revived. Harris was on a business trip to the city from his home in Atlanta, Gilmore told Reuters.
