Thai "yellow shirts" rally over border row

BANGKOK - Thai "yellow shirt" demonstrators returned to Bangkok's streets on Tuesday, threatening a prolonged protest if the government failed to revoke an agreement with Cambodia aimed at solving a long-running border dispute.
The rally by about 3,000 members of the yellow-shirted People's Alliance for Democracy came just two days after 30,000 rival "red shirts" held their own protest, highlighting Thailand's deep political divisions and the potential for instability ahead of elections due this year.
The rallies could intensify, as they have before, presenting a challenge for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on two fronts from groups that have separately held crippling, and at times violent, blockades affecting government offices, commercial districts and Bangkok's airports.
Massive and protracted PAD protests since 2005 helped to undermine two governments led or backed by ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the figurehead of the red shirts, who lives in exile to avoid a jail term for graft.
The re-emergence of the nationalist PAD has raised questions over its motives and why it has become openly critical of Abhisit and his ruling Democrat Party, the movement's long-time allies.
"The yellow-shirt protests are using the Cambodian issue as the justification," said Roberto Herrera-Lim, an Asia analyst at risk consultancy Eurasia Group.
"But this demonstration, like that of the red shirts, is tied in to manoeuvring around this year's expected elections."
The arrest late on Monday of five men in possession of unauthorised firearms and home-made bombs close to the site of the rally has led to suggestions the PAD's allies may create violence to scuttle the election, which Abhisit has promised to call on the condition there is no unrest.
If the Democrats, which still have support of the military and Thailand's royalist elite, fail to win a mandate in the polls, it is likely the opposition Puea Thai Party would win, as all other pro-Thaksin parties have in the past decade.
A Puea Thai-led government would likely face deep opposition that could worsen a five-year political crisis hanging over Thailand's $264 billion economy, Southeast Asia's second biggest.
Chamlong Srimuang, a core PAD leader, said Abhisit's office would not be blocked but warned the group would not end its protest until a decade-old Memorandum of Understanding with Cambodia was revoked.
"We did not come here on a whim. We have waited for the prime minister to deal with this for two years and the situation is only getting worse, like every other issue. This government is proving to be a big disappointment," Chamlong told Reuters.
