Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco dedicated much of his address to the Italian Bishops Conference (CEI) on Monday to the scandal, saying "whoever accepts a political mandate must be aware of the moderation, sobriety, discipline and honour that this involves." "Worrying clouds are gathering once more over our country," he warned, referring to the impact of the sex scandal on top of the effects the global economic crisis have had on Italy. Emma Marcegaglia, head of Confindustria -- Italy's powerful employers' federation -- tore into Berlusconi's centre-right government late on Sunday for neglecting Italy's economic and social problems over the last six months amid political infighting and sex scandals. "We need to see if the government is capable of carrying out certain reforms, otherwise if there's no majority, there's no cohesion, and we'll need to make other decisions. We can't wait any longer," she said. As allegations of Berlusconi's late night parties with call girls continued to make headlines, Marcegaglia insisted "there is another Italy, that goes to bed early and wakes up early, that really works." For the past week the media has been obsessed by assertions by Milan magistrates that Berlusconi consorted with prostitutes he kept in rent-free luxury apartments and paid for sex with an underage disco dancer named Ruby. Self-declared escort girl Nadia Macri, who claims Berlusconi paid her for sex, says she remembers Ruby receiving money from him at one of his parties while she was still a minor. The prime minister has denied ever paying for sex -- not illegal in Italy unless the prostitute is under age -- while Ruby, a Moroccan whose real name is Karima El Mahroug, says they never had an affair. Berlusconi's lawyers on Monday submitted a list of witnesses who attended the prime minister's parties to the prosecutor's office in Milan, though Berlusconi himself has refused to obey a summons for questioning. Lele Mora, an agent for Italian starlets and a friend of Berlusconi who is under investigation for alleged pimping, denied any wrongdoing on Sunday. Mora claimed escorts had lied about sex with the prime minister and said he had helped organise the parties for a lonely Berlusconi who "needed friends around him" and enjoyed helping those in need with gifts and money. Catholics in the opposition Democratic Party (PD) wrote an open letter published by Italian newspapers attacking politicians who claimed to live by Christian values and morals but whose behaviour was increasingly amoral. On Friday one of Italy's most popular magazines, Famiglia Cristiana, said the allegations about Berlusconi were indecent and warned that the prime minister risked alienating Catholics and losing votes. But while nearly half of Italians want the embattled prime minister to resign, according to a poll carried by the Corriere della Sera on Sunday, backing for his People of Freedom (PDL) party was up on the previous month. The paper said the sex scandal seems to have had little impact on the standing of the various parties among voters, with the PDL retaining 30 percent support compared to 28 percent in December. Milan's prosecutors revealed their investigation on January 14, just a day after a top court partially stripped the prime minister of political immunity and experts warned the scandal might force the government to early elections. The Democratic Party has said it will petition for Berlusconi's resignation for "dishonouring Italy in the eyes of the world," and hopes to collect 10 million signatures from disgruntled Italians. Pier Ferdinando Casini, head of the opposition Union of the Centre (UDC) which quit an alliance with Berlusconi in 2006, said Monday he would sign up to a coalition with the PDL on condition that the prime minister step down. The idea was immediately rejected by the PDL.
