Oprah Winfrey says speechless at news of half-sister
LOS ANGELES - Oprah Winfrey on Monday revealed that she had a half-sister that she only found out about late last year, saying the news left her speechless. Welcoming single mother of two Patricia to an emotional reunion on her daytime talk show, Winfrey said her mother Vernita Lee kept the birth in 1963 a secret and gave the baby up for adoption.
Music mood muted despite Lady Gaga, more big albums
LONDON - When even Lady Gaga can't lift the gloom, you know the music industry is in the doldrums. Despite a release schedule that includes the reigning queen of pop, Britney Spears, R.E.M., U2 and Coldplay, record labels are bracing themselves for another tough year.
Christina Aguilera to sing Super Bowl national anthem
LOS ANGELES - Christina Aguilera will sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl on February 6, Fox television and the National Football League announced on Monday. "I have been performing the anthem since I was seven years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true," the five-time Grammy award winning singer-songwriter said in a statement. "I am really excited to be part of such an iconic event."
Ed Helms talks "Cedar Rapids" and "Hangover 2"
LOS ANGELES - Is it too early to declare 2011 as the year of Ed Helms? On January 23 the former "Daily Show" correspondent premiered to a warm reception the raucous comedy "Cedar Rapids," his first starring role, for director Miguel Arteta. Helms, who turns 37 on January 24, executive produced the picture and plays Tim Lippe, an emotionally immature insurance salesman who comes out of his shell at a corporate convention by, among other things, smoking crack with a prostitute.
Fitness guru Jack LaLanne dies at 96 in California
LOS ANGELES - Jack LaLanne, a one-time sugar-holic who became a television fitness guru preaching exercise and healthy diet to a generation of American housewives, died on Sunday at age 96, his daughter said. LaLanne, who became U.S. television fixture in his close-fitting jumpsuit starting in 1959 and came to be regarded as the father of the modern fitness movement, succumbed to pneumonia following a brief illness at his home in Morro Bay, along the California's central coast.
Aniston, Kutcher vie for Hollywood's worst awards
LOS ANGELES - If films starring Jennifer Aniston, Ashton Kutcher and the lovelorn cast of "Twilight" left you dumbfounded, you're officially in good company. All are prominent contenders for the Razzie Awards, an annual competition honoring Hollywood's worst movies, actors and filmmakers, its organizer said on Monday.
AOL to air podcasts by Kevin Smith, Adam Carolla
LOS ANGELES - Ramping up its content offerings, AOL will on Monday launch a late-night video block featuring highlights from podcasts by director Kevin Smith and comedians Adam Carolla and Kevin Pollak. "The idea is to take these very popular podcasts with their very rabid audiences and find a platform-appropriate way to create a programing block," said Amber Lawson, AOL's head of programing. "We want to tap into their audiences and create video content that is consumable in one- to five-minute chunks."
BBC shrinks online unit to cut costs and refocus
LONDON - Britain's state-backed public broadcaster the BBC said Monday it would close 200 websites over the next two years in a drive to slash costs and reshape online content. The move, which includes the loss of 360 jobs, is part of a raft of cost-cutting measures following a reduction in its negotiated license fee funding which was chopped by a fifth last October.
Fashion icon Rafa revels in added exposure
MELBOURNE - Rafa Nadal, who has followed David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo as the new face of Armani underwear and jeans, said on Monday he loved being a sex symbol. The world's top tennis player, known for his bulging biceps and chiseled torso, has attracted camera flashes and wolf-whistles at the Australian Open where he regularly peels off his sweat-drenched shirts during changeovers.
Kevin Smith faces protests as he unleashes "Indie 2.0"
PARK CITY, Utah - Film director Kevin Smith has unveiled a plan to self-release his new "Red State" at the Sundance Film Festival, after facing down protesters that brought him publicity money can't buy. Invoking the name of movie kingpin Harvey Weinstein and the hockey stick of Wayne Gretzky, Smith said that after 17 years of making movies, he could not think of anything worse than creating a film and turning it over to a studio to market.
