"Harry Potter" global box office tops $330 million
LOS ANGELES - British boy wizard Harry Potter made movie magic again at weekend box offices as the newest chapter, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1," cast a spell in more than 50 countries and collected $330 million in global ticket sales. That tally includes a best-ever U.S. and Canadian debut of $125.1 million in this latest adventure of the teenage sorcerer and his friends at Hogwarts school. Six previous "Potter" films collected $5.4 billion globally for the Warner Bros studio.
Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi get all "Tangled" up
LOS ANGELES - Leave it to the animators of the Disney film studio to put a new spin on an old fairy tale, and this time the Brothers Grimm's classic "Rapunzel" gets a full makeover in "Tangled." The movie, which debuts in U.S. theaters on Wednesday, re-imagines the tale of the girl with the long golden hair who is locked away in a forest tower before a prince comes along and tries to spring her loose.
Actor Wesley Snipes headed to prison for tax evasion
MIAMI - Actor Wesley Snipes was ordered on Friday to start serving a three-year prison sentence for failing to file income tax returns by a federal judge who rejected the Hollywood star's bid for a new trial. "The defendant Snipes had a fair trial ... The time has come for the judgment to be enforced," U.S. District Judge Terrell Hodges said in his ruling.
MSNBC suspends another host for political gifts
NEW YORK - MSNBC television suspended conservative morning host Joe Scarborough for two days for giving money to political candidates, meting out the same punishment given to liberal host Keith Olbermann two weeks ago for a similar offense. Scarborough said the donations went to his brother and three longtime family friends and he wrongly believed the personal nature of the gifts exempted him from the NBC News policy on campaign contributions.
Rapper DMX is back in an Arizona jail
PHOENIX - Troubled rapper DMX is back in an Arizona jail for drug-related probation violations including cocaine use, court officials said on Friday. The rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was taken into custody without incident Thursday night in Phoenix by probation officers, authorities said. He is being held in a county jail without bond.
Fox moves "American Idol" to Wednesday
LOS ANGELES - The Fox television network on Friday unveiled a midseason revamp to its prime-time schedule, including a move to Wednesday for the first night of its No. 1-rated singing contest "American Idol." "Idol," has long aired the first of its two weekly shows on Tuesday with the second one day later. But the shift paves the way for Fox to launch a new block of Tuesday night comedies led by its hit musical show "Glee."
Rolling Stones team up with "Call of Duty"
NEW YORK - Historically, the Rolling Stones have never needed much help selling their music. But this month the group witnessed a notable bump in digital single sales for a pair of songs, thanks to the release of the latest installment in the popular "Call of Duty" videogame franchise. "Call of Duty: Black Ops" was released November 9. But more than a week earlier, on October 31, Santa Monica, Calif.-based publisher Activision released an ad for TV and the Internet featuring a montage of the game's cinematic cut scenes with the Stones' "Gimme Shelter" as the soundtrack. The ad appeared during several prime-time TV shows and on several game enthusiast websites, garnering more than 3 million views on YouTube alone.
Anne Hathaway talks of "Love and Other Drugs"
NEW YORK - Anne Hathaway teams up again in romantic comedy drama "Love and Other Drugs" with her "Brokeback Mountain" co-star Jake Gyllenhaal. Her performance as Maggie, an sexually overt free spirit who meets a pharmaceutical sales rep and finds herself surprisingly falling in love, has garnered Oscar talk heading into the Hollywood awards season.
EU orders Italy to pay back Elton John subsidy
BRUSSELS used by local authorities to pay for a concert by British singer Elton John last year, a Commission spokesman said on Friday. The concert, in the southern city of Naples, was part of the Piedigrotta festival in September 2009 and was funded in part from a 2.25 million euro grant to promote regional development.
Justin Bieber announces first U.K. arena tour
