Netflix raises prices and offers stream-only service
NEW YORK - Netflix Inc <NFLX.O> said it will offer its first unlimited streaming-only subscription plan in the United States for $7.99 a month, and raise prices of its popular unlimited streaming and unlimited DVD plans by a dollar -- eventually shifting away from its mail business. Netflix shares rose 7 percent to $184.71 in morning trading following the announcement.
Google seeks digital rights to Miramax films: report
BANGALORE - Google Inc <GOOG.O> is talking with Filmyard Holdings to gain digital rights to film studio Miramax's archives to boost its efforts to turn YouTube into a destination with longer-form content, the New York Post said, citing people close to the situation. The current deal may include rights for more than 700 films, the paper said.
Wi-Lan sues Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Charter
BANGALORE - Technology licensing firm Wi-Lan Inc <WIN.TO> said it has initiated a patent infringement litigation against Comcast Corp <CMCSA.O>, Time Warner Cable Inc <TWC.N>, and Charter Communications <CHTR.O> in a U.S. federal court. The Canadian company alleged that the three U.S. companies continued to infringe its patent by offering to sell, operate, advertise and market cable systems and cable modems.
Special Report: The stock, the Web, the CEO and his lawyers
LONDON - As a CEO, David Bramhill could handle the online attacks on his looks and his character. "You get used to the personal stuff that goes up: 'Fat bastard,' etc.," says the burly one-time boxer and oil industry veteran. "I don't like it but I suppose being in the position I'm in, OK, they can take pot shots at me." But when the messages on internet bulletin boards became a concerted campaign of criticism against his oil and gas exploration company, Bramhill snapped. "When it comes to dishonesty, and not running the company the way it should be run, and spreading untrue rumors -- this is where we've got major, major issues," a disillusioned Bramhill told Reuters in early September.
Dell results latest warning for Intel: report
NEW YORK - A cautious outlook from Dell <DELL.O> is the latest potential warning sign for fourth-quarter results from top chipmaker Intel <INTC.O>, Barron's said in its November 22 edition. Dell beat estimates handily for the third quarter but said revenue in the fourth quarter could be flat and that margins could contract, with a weaker pickup in consumer sales than it had expected.
Egypt dissent yet to get from Facebook to the streets
CAIRO - Internet campaigns for political reform in Egypt are losing traction because opposition groups have failed to channel online voices into a grass-roots movement capable of challenging the authorities. Calls for constitutional change by presidential hopeful Mohamed ElBaradei, the former head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, garnered quarter of a million supporters on a Facebook page earlier this year, but the campaign appears to have fizzled.
Indonesians beat slow disaster relief by tweeting
JAKARTA - Tech-savvy Indonesians are using social network Twitter to beat a slow government in delivering relief to disaster victims, after a tsunami and volcanic eruptions stretched official aid capacity in the sprawling archipelago. The Southeast Asian country of 17,000 islands, where transport can be difficult at the best of times, was hit by a tsunami, earthquakes, floods and volcanic eruptions within the space of a few weeks last month, and the death toll keeps rising.
Pentagon says "aware" of China Internet rerouting
WASHINGTON - The Defense Department is aware that Internet traffic was rerouted briefly through China earlier this year, a Pentagon spokesman said on Friday, referring to what a congressionally appointed panel has described as a hijack. The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission charged in its annual report on Wednesday that state-owned China Telecom advertised erroneous network routes that instructed "massive volumes" of U.S. and other foreign Internet traffic to go through Chinese servers during an 18-minute stretch on April 8.
Groupon considers sale to Google: reports
NEW YORK - E-commerce coupon site Groupon Inc is considering selling itself to Google Inc <GOOG.O>, according to media reports on Friday. The two are in discussions about an acquisition for more than $3 billion, reported the technology blog AllThingsD, citing anonymous sources, on Friday.
Stuxnet may be part of Iran atom woes: ex-IAEA aide
VIENNA - Iran has been experiencing years of problems with equipment used in its uranium enrichment program and the Stuxnet computer virus may be one of the factors, a former top U.N. nuclear inspections official said. Olli Heinonen, who stepped down in August as head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog's inspections worldwide, said there may be many reasons for technical glitches that have cut the number of working centrifuges at Iran's Natanz enrichment plant.
